1. When was this photo taken?
1980’s or 90’s - not sure
2. Where was this photo taken?
Cranbrook Academy, Bloomfield Hills, MI
3. Who took this photo?
S. Kay Young
4. What are we looking at here?
The ivy laced trees on the grounds of Cranbrook. This is a piece of land that I am honored to know well and have been visiting since my teens. Some of the trees in this image have since fallen but continue to feed the earth. Because of the grain and age of the film, it's magical and delicate.
5. How does this old photo make you feel?
It makes me long for my youth and for the simplicity and beauty of a well processed, correctly printed, elegant silver print. In 2014, there was a great flood in our area and I lost so many negs and prints. Finding this roll in a random box of photo supplies at the time LRA so graciously executed this project was a wonderful gift.
6. Is this what you expected to see?
There were no expectations on my part. However, I was delighted to see that my love of and respect for trees continues throughout my work to present. Also, I was surprised that it was hot with one of my many toy cameras hence, the soft focus.
7. Does this photo bring back any memories?
It brought back memories of wonderful time spent with friends who have walked on. We had a very large posse who travelled together for fun, pleasure and appreciation of art. This was a destination spot. It was and still is a wonderful body of land to take students on photographic field trips.
8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?
My hope is the views will remember a time when we were not attached to our electronic devices and took time to see and give thanks to beauty and wonder of our sacred earth.
