• 1. When was this photo taken?

Probably December

2. Where was this photo taken?

My ancestral home (still Mom's)

3. Who took this photo?

I did.

4. What are we looking at here?

Our friends Jay and Meno. This is my home where I grew up in San Diego, and where Mom still lives. I recovered this film after my apartment fire in SF and the rolls had been in a drawer since, which is why the image is damaged. Our friend Jay died from a brain tumor in 2005. This was a precious image to come across, totally unexpectedly.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Jay was a gem of a human. It made me sad, while bringing back a flood of emotions by seeing his genuine smile. We all miss him still and always will. Meno is a life-long friend and will alway be. Much love.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

Not at all. I had no idea what to expect. My film was in a drawer and survived a fire. Amazed to see anything from it.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Friendship shared at Mom's home. Always open doors on the holidays.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

They will see the beauty in a moment of connection with those you love to spend time with.

I have no idea who this woman is!

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It makes me miss my grandmother. This roll was in her house after she passed away. Not sure why I've kept it over 25 years!

6. Is this what you expected to see?

No! I was hoping there may be some lost pictures of family members that I recognized.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

It brings back memories of my childhood and my grandmother.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I think they, like me, may might wonder who this woman is and what she is thinking as she looks off onto the distance.
Sure, none though I can speak to here.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Memories of childhood play and passing the time.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Good question. Its not a "pretty portrait" in the traditional sense, but as a result, I think it lends intrigue due to that. I think it will transport some back to their childhood, the raw and authentic being that children embody.

 • 1. When was this photo taken?

Summer 1998

2. Where was this photo taken?

Somewhere off I 20 in Texas

3. Who took this photo?

Jason Thomas Fritz

4. What are we looking at here?

I was traveling on a long distance bus from Phoenix to Dallas, when it broke down at 4am in the middle of nowhere. We had to wait for another bus to take us to the nearest town, a tiny two-stop light town somewhere off of Interstate 20. This was the view of the gas station as the sun was rising.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

I was living in a very punk, DIY way of life back. Traveling a lot of Greyhound or freight train hopping. I miss the adventure—the carefree life.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I have a bag of undeveloped film from that period. I always had my Nikon FM2 with me. I never developed a lot of the rolls.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

It was a wild ride before the bus broke down. The drunk woman in front of me started fighting with her boyfriend. She was punching him so much he started to bleed. It was the days before cell phones. My friend ended up waiting 6 hours for me at the station.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

This feels like more like a personal diary than something that would interest others. It’s the type of one-stoplight town in rural America everyone has forgotten about.
3. Who took this photo?

4. What are we looking at here?

Me.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Puzzled.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

Not at all. This was a roll of 120 film in a 10 or 12 shot back on my Speed Graphic. There were four shots on the roll that were salvageable. All appear to have been taken with the camera lying on my lap. With so few shots on a roll I would not have wasted them this way. As I recall the film holder had some problems advancing. I suspect that I thought that I wasn't advancing the film and repeatedly pulled the lever and fired the shutter. Obviously it was working just fine. I'm rather surprised that nothing besides the four "lap" shots turned out on the roll.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

Outside of remembering my problems with the 120 back, not really. Nothing in any of the photos was clear enough to be able to identify where it was taken. I even shared them with a friend who would have been with me at that time but she couldn't recognize anything either.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Mild amusement at my somewhat anguished look as I "shot" myself in the face.

Others will probably have the same childhood, happy memory.
2001

2. Where was this photo taken?

Denver, CO

3. Who took this photo?

I did

4. What are we looking at here?

A card I printed and it's reflection in the windshield of my car.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It makes me feel sad because the US government response was to start two wars. So many service members killed. So many civilians killed. War isn't about who's right, it's about who's left. Those first few days after the attacks, when so many of us felt so stunned, the world reached out. That was incredible. That makes me feel hopeful.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

No. I thought all the photos were of my childhood home because I remember taking photos of the house before my mom moved out.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

I'd printed this image because while I feel fortunate to live in America I have always felt connected to the idea of all humans being more alike than not, more connected with each other than not - regardless of political boundary. I put the card in my car after 9/11 when the whole world was reaching out to the US and the people of the US were reaching back - before the politicians stepped in.
I remember feeling very sure of my decision to go nursing school because in a world that was changing, I knew I wanted to be a helper.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

We all remember where we were the day of the attack.

 • 1. When was this photo taken?

Around 2002

2. Where was this photo taken?

At my childhood home in Boulder, CO

3. Who took this photo?

I did

4. What are we looking at here?

A wee section of pussy willow branch.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

I can so easily touch the grief and disbelief of that day. I wish I could go back to that fourteen year-old girl and listen to her thoughts, to hold a space for her to grieve in.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

Not at all. I'd kept this branch and other things that were significant to various events in my childhood. I took them out to photograph them and I'm not sure if I got rid of them after that or stored them again. The photos were taken in my childhood home. I remember the squeak of the hardwood floors.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

The day I found out Judy was killed in a plane crash I walked to catch the bus to school and picked a bit of pussy willow from a neighbor's bush. I remember how soft it felt on my fingers and how hard I studied the structure of the branch and the soft little toes of the pussy willow. I remember wondering how there could still be something so soft when something so terrible had happened.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I honestly don't know. We all have some grief, so perhaps people will identify with that. The photo itself feels so personal it's hard to imagine what others might feel.

 • 1. When was this photo taken?

Summer 2005

2. Where was this photo taken?

Pound Ridge, NY

3. Who took this photo?

My 5 year old son

4. What are we looking at here?

This is my daughter when she was two. She's standing on a patio wall we just installed. In the background was our children's play set

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Disappointed, as I often used to feel when picking up prints at the drugstore! Initially there's a feeling of anticipation dropping the film into the envelope & sending it off! When I'd pick up my photos two weeks later, they were never as good as I had hoped

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I didn't know what to expect. This photo looks like it'd been improperly exposed, like when the back of the camera was opened before the film was fully rolled back. I didn't expect to see my daughter in the photo because we bought our first digital camera right before she was born & I thought we stopped using our 35mm.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

YES! Initially, when I received the old photos, I was so disappointed with the quality, that I didn't look closely at them. After a couple of months, I took a closer look, & even bad photos, can evoke strong feelings & memories. My children are teenagers now, & the days of playing on the swing set have long past. What strikes me most in the picture, though, are my daughter's chubby bare feet! She hates walking outside in bare feet now!

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Because of the poor quality, I think others will barely give it a glance, as was my first inclination. But maybe they too will remember the frustration & limitations of 110 & 35mm film. Today, photos whose quality cannot be enhanced with software, or are not to our liking, are immediately deleted from our devices, therefore in the future, we won't have many "rejects" to ponder.

 • 1. When was this photo taken?

Maybe 25 years ago, c. 1992

2. Where was this photo taken?

Probably Schnebly Hill Road near Sedona, AZ

3. Who took this photo?

William Latshaw

4. What are we looking at here?

I believe it's a view down Schnebly Hill Road from my campsite. This was before the area was regulated & you could free-camp anywhere.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

I had recently left the business world and was on a vision quest. It was an exciting and uncertain time. I was trying to decide where to live, and was considering intentional communities (aka communes...). I had some apprehension around living in such close quarters with 'strangers'.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had no idea what to expect from this film.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

Quite a few. I spent some time in Sedona, AZ trying to locate a suitable intentional community in the area. I connected with a guy who was in the early stages of setting one up, but that can take months or years.

As I was standing in the parking lot of his business talking to him, an old VW van drove up. Painted on the side was a bunny rabbit sitting on a ridge watching the sunset, and the words "Reevis Mountain School of Self-Reliance." Strapped to the roof were crates of vegetables.

The driver was a willowy woman named Angelique, one of the two 'foundation' members of the school/community. Long story short, I wound up camping in the desert that night with her and moving to Reevis. It's in the Superstition Mts. of AZ, and about 10 miles and 5 creek crossings from nowhere.

Reevis was one of the communities that I had been considering, but had 'cold feet' over the prospect of just diving in. Talk about providence.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Well, kindred spirits may get a quiver down their spines, and the fuzzy, faded quality of the image seems appropriate to the memories that it evokes.
This is my dad smelling newly blossomed flowers while he was visiting me at my mom's house, an hour north of where he lives. He has Aspberger's and our relationship has always been strained and odd - but he's definitely my muse, and is always willing to let me take his picture.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It makes me feel sad. I'm an only child and I know my parent's won't be around forever... And I am constantly torn between being frustrated with him and his mood issues/political beliefs/other issues and wanting to be close to him because time is limited.

Not at all.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

4. What are we looking at here?

My boyfriend and I were about to have sex. He was (and I'm sure still is) a filmmaker and I'm a photographer. I found this crappy and wonderful point and shoot camera for $3 and had some film laying around, so I was going shutter-crazy with my images. It felt freeing to snap away and to document our passion.

I was living in Seattle at the time, and he was here in Brooklyn, so our rendezvous were very sexually prolific. We were deeply in love, but my family didn't approve; I didn't care, but it was definitely a sore spot for both of us. It was an intense relationship in almost every regard.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

How does it make me feel?

Sad, empty, but also happy because I left the relationship when it wasn't healthy. But whenever I see photos from this time, it makes me a little... homesick?

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I did and didn't. I knew there were some nude photos, but I didn't remember us taking photos this close or this intense. It made me feel like I was right back in the moment.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

Of course! I remember the sex. I remember the fighting. I remember the drama. I remember that I was his first love, and we both never felt love like it. I remember it all, on a very intense level.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

They'll be intrigued or disgusted. Some people aren't okay with interracial relationships, whether they claim to be or not. I've discovered that a lot of white folks are really turned off and disgusted on some level -- which is truly fucked up and sad.

But I digress, it's definitely confrontational regardless of race.

4. What are we looking at here?

This is the late Burt Swersey at his home in upstate New York. Burt was an inventor, who taught innovation. He inspired students to think about solving problems worth solving. He was a deeply reflective man. Burt died unexpectedly a few years ago & for those of us who knew him the wound is still fresh. The photo is quintessentially Burt: direct, kind, unassuming, & secretly brilliant

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

I felt strong emotions upon opening my link & seeing this image. I learned about the
Lostrolls project from Burt's son Bill, a childhood friend & photographer. The kismet & coincidence of Bill's Lostrolls tip leading me to find this roll felt magical. There were only four images on that roll, all portraits of the his family, each capturing something special

6. Is this what you expected to see?

No. I expected something random & perhaps even out of focus or indecipherable. I did not expect a clear, well-framed, image of something so meaningful

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

I can remember the feel of my new, cheap, Chinese made Seagull Rollilex knockoff in my hands. I loved taking pictures with that camera (rarely used 120 film as it's not convenient to develop-hence it sitting in a drawer twenty years). We had a meal that day on a screened patio with fresh corn from the local fields, & a stroll around the garden. The image is B/W but my memory comes back in full color

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Burt had a huge impact as a teacher at RPI, a late career move he undertook after retiring to the farm in middle age. His students will certainly see something special. I think his unique, calm demeanor, will be apparent to those who didn't know him & perhaps even his penetrating gaze communicates something wise

4. What are we looking at here?

My Rottweiler, Lady, a gentle soul. Toddlers in Prospect Park took rides on her back and our UPS driver took her on his route around the neighborhood. She was rescued in Seattle and swam daily from our house on Puget Sound. She came cross-country to Brooklyn and adapted well to the smells of the city and the excitement of making friends with dogs, cats and people.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

My memories of Lady fill me with joy and sadness. When I look at this photo I think back of the long walks we took together. It was during these walks that I figured out difficult problems, enjoyed the beauty of the neighborhood and made plans for the future. And when I look at her picture I think of all the times she provided the emotional support no one else could. This photo makes me feel lucky to have had Lady in my life.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had no idea what I would see.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

A plethora of memories. All good. See previous answer.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Those that knew Lady will feel sad that she is no longer with us and happy to have known her. Her name and memories of her interactions with loved ones comes up frequently. Others who may fear or have negative feelings about Rottweilers may reconsider. A loving breed that is misunderstood.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

It was taken during a solo 'vision quest' trip at a major fork in the road of my life. The memories that it stirs are complex, full of anticipation and fear and fun. I was shifting from a conventional life as a business person with the house & the pool, a kid going into college, and taking a hard turn down the road less traveled.

Nostalgic and thinking of my son as a little boy. I miss those days- he is now going on 22 years old. It really is a good depictions of childhood in Minnesota. We play in the snow! I am surprised at how much my daughter, even at this young age, displayed the personality that we see in her now as a 27-year-old. She is someone who knows her own mind and is always ready to participate in new experiences. At the time I took the photo, this trait seemed like stubbornness and was a challenge to me as a new mom. Seeing the image makes me feel the pointed and poignant passage of time. It makes me wish I could re-experience that period in my life.
My nephew Matthew, as an adolescent, and his grandfather Sam (my father), sharing a horseback riding experience at a family reunion in upstate New York.
5. How does this old photo make you feel?

This image evokes in me a mixture of longing and bittersweet feelings. My nephew Matthew was very close with his grandfather, who passed away only seven years after this photo was taken. The loss was extremely difficult for Matthew. He is now a father of 2 boys and named his older son Sam, after his grandfather (and my father). I see in this photo my father as I’d like to remember him--strong and enjoying time with his family.
6. Is this what you expected to see?

No! I had forgotten about these images and the details of this extended family reunion.
Yes, this brings back memories of my father, who so enjoyed his close relationship with Matthew, his first grandchild. I see in this photo the vigorous, optimistic person that my father was. I had no way of knowing at the time that this sort of physical activity would not be possible for him in a few short years.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?
I think that people will notice how serious they look and how my father's horse appears to be challenging him. Nevertheless this was a special moment that grandfather and grandson had together, taking pleasure from each other's company.

A flood of memories: the smell of the gardenia blooming in the background; the cheap red wine Don drank a full glass of with every lunch; Gene's energetic conversation; the strong California sunshine; the cold pool. That day I was with my then-boyfriend and his little cousin, neither of whom knew how to swim. The difficulty of that relationship was somewhat eased in Don and Gene's loving company.
I had heard that the Ken Follet books about cathedral building in medieval life were sort of based on this cathedral. At the time I was there they were filming "The de Vinci Code" in parts of the cathedral. I saw Tom Hanks in a Lincoln pub that weekend
4. What are we looking at here?

A pot created by Charles Counts for his wife Hedi Bak, depicting her cat. It's inscribed on the opposite side with "Hedi's cat" and signed by Charles, from his latter years. This is on the front porch of Hedi's house in Oak Ridge, with my struggling gardening efforts all around. The pot with the Christmas cactus directly below Charles' pot is one of my own from my student days, long before I met Charles and Hedi.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Joy over Charles' whimsy and love for Hedi. Frustration (still) over trying to garden in deep shade on a steep hillside. Nostalgia for their unique companionship. Relief for having documented it. Sorrow for the losses it reminds me of.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

Not at all.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

This was the year after Charles died suddenly at his pottery teaching position at the University of Maiduguri, Nigeria, and Hedi returned without him. I visited Hedi every weekend for many years thereafter to help her. This picture was probably taken during one of her naps, during which I would often take the opportunity to document a lot of the artwork cluttering her house, a lot of it hers and Charles' own work, but various works by others, too.

Hedi died towards the end of the decade. And since the emergence of Boko Haram, I fear for Charles' legacy in Maiduguri, following Michael Cardew's footsteps and trying to keep traditional pottery alive. I'm glad neither lived to see that chaos. Hedi's son Clemens Bak still keeps his parents' legacies going at bakart-museum.org.

This is a backstage candid of Robby Griffith as Alfred Chamberlain, during a local production of Jules Pfeiffer's "Little Murders."

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

A minor shock at first to see an "injured" friend, and then to remember the broader circumstances. Also some sadness, as Robby passed away a few years ago, with some gratitude that this lost picture of him has been recovered.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

Not at all. I thought it would be random garden documentation shots, which I always did far too much of.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

We opened the week after 9-11, and we had to do some real soul searching to decide if we were going to cancel the show. "Little Murders" is a black farce about senseless violence, among other things, which ends with the characters sniper-shooting random strangers on the street for entertainment. In the end, we did open, and rightly so. It gave the show a strange, unique gravitas, to say the least.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Probably some similar shock at the apparent injury. Hopefully some recognition if they read the back-story: 9-11 was a gut punch that left us all wondering how to respond, and what "normal" was going to be from then on.
I grew up in the 'burbs of Connecticut and my first big move as an adult was after college, to Boston. I knew nothing about the city and knew no one when I arrived. I used to wander around for hours on foot, learning my new home from the inside out. One afternoon, I found a small pedestrian footbridge in the North End that took me over the Charles River. It was one of those paths that made me feel like I probably shouldn't be using it, but nevertheless, I persisted. I ended up in Charlestown, in a small little park (that I later found out is called Paul Revere Park). I remember feeling like I'd struck gold - I found a really nice, quiet park that no one seemed to know about. I grew up visiting parks on a regular basis and it felt like a little slice of home in the middle of the hectic city. I never want to lose my sense of curiosity, it's what has propelled me to be the traveler and photographer I am today, and I this photograph reminds me of this.
4. What are we looking at here?

It's the Christmas gift exchange and the first time my husband Carl has gotten to see his first grandchild, Marie, who was then about 7 months old.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

I have a mixture of happiness and great sorrow looking at this photo. Just looking at Carl, you can see how happy he was to have a little grand-daughter. He was thrilled! And you can see how physically able and mentally engaged he was. I remark on those things because 3 years later, in 2008, Carl would start to show signs of Lewy body dementia, a widespread yet under-recognized disease that robs a person of their physical and cognitive capacities. By Christmas of 2013, Carl would be dead. He was the love of my life and I devoted myself to his care during the 5 years of his illness, so this picture brings me pain and joy as I remember the exuberant man he was and yet know what fate is in store for him.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I was a bit afraid of what I'd discover on these rolls of film. Carl and I traveled a good deal and had many wonderful experiences, so I thought that these would be lost vacation photos. As much as I wanted to see them, I was afraid that seeing images of our happy times together would stab my heart as they reminded me of what I've lost.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

This photo conjures up memories of a very happy holiday gathering for our family. At this particular moment, Carl's children all seemed to be settled and happy. Carl and I were in a home we had renovated (and the renovation was finished!). Everything then was going very well.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I imagine that others will probably skip over this picture, dismissing it as just another Christmas photo..

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

So happy! The photo was taken on a crazy camping trip where just about everything went wrong--the first campground was full, the second campground that we drove a distance to find was underwater! We "camped" the first night at a hotel and ate our beans and wieners outside. We had a great weekend.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had no expectations. I couldn't remember where the roll of film was from and why it wasn't developed.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

My husband and I just moved back to Wisconsin (our home state) after being away for 20 years. We left St. Louis, Missouri, and we're feeling both excited and wistful about the transition. Seeing a reminder of our time in Missouri--especially involving someone so important to the state--is really cool.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I think they'll be surprised if they read about the photo. I know that a lot of families venture to Hannibal, but I'm not sure if many people know where Mark Twain was born. The cabin is in a historical site (inside), and the town (I believe it's called Florida) doesn't have much going on anymore.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

This photo was taken on my backyard deck in the spring of 2005. I had just moved back into my house after a devastating fire that had destroyed most of my possessions, most of the house and 3 beloved pets. But when I look at this photo I am filled with gratitude that that little girl and her brother were not spending the night with me on that fateful day as they quite often did. This photo fills me with joy!
5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Happy to be reminded of an opportunity I never thought I would have and to immediately be able to recall/feel the excitement of seeing the clouds clear to give us a view of one of the peaks.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

This is what we hoped to see but were not expecting to because of the dense cloud cover.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

I remember hiking in the high altitude. It wasn't a rugged hike although a bit rocky, however the altitude made it strenuous. I hiked with my nose to the ground and when we reached a point where we thought the peaks might be visible I looked up just at the moment the clouds cleared a view to this mountain top. I quickly took a photo and wasn't sure what I captured until I saw this image.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Well, this is certainly not a National Geographic photo but I hope people will recognize in it the universal experience of trying to capture a moment in each of our lives when something exciting and unexpected happens, fleeting as it may be. It's a rather ordinary photo of a wonderful personal experience. I can still feel it.

Jerusalem

3. Who took this photo?

4. What are we looking at here?

Decorated horns from rams -- used during Jewish worship services at the beginning of their calendar year (early autumn). These horns are blown during the worship service like trumpets, to summon the people to return to first principles of ethics.

The photo's view from inside the store selling these ritual objects allows us at the same time to look out its window onto the street and sidewalk -- the latter is made from the golden stone native to Jerusalem, as are the walls of the store itself holding this display shelf, which evokes Jews' sentimental link with Jerusalem's many centuries of tradition and identity.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Appreciative of the artistry that created this wide variety of horn-types. Enjoying the several colors, in harmony, (not clashing).

6. Is this what you expected to see?

2011 is 6 years ago -- so I'd totally forgotten having visited this store and having taken this photo. Therefore I had no expectations to find such an image on this roll of film!

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

Yes, my spontaneous strolling through the city that day, allowing my curiosity to lead me to interesting discoveries.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Many viewers might enjoy the photo's colors, the horns' sinuous ('writhing') shapes -- echoed in the curled black iron grating seen below them through the window -- and the sunny brightness of the photo overall. Additionally, Jews familiar with the objects being displayed (besides the horns there are candle holders called "hanukiah" and a glass ceremonial plate for the Passover ritual meal) will be interested in how modern artists have innovated new forms for traditional, required, religious objects.

Nostalgic. There's nothing quite like pulling into a joint like Buds after logging hundreds of miles on the road. I tracked this location down on Google Maps. Buds is gone. Same with Em's Corner. They were replaced with a Shell station.

It makes my heart heavy. The title of this statue is "And Jesus Wept". I was probably going for that interpretation when I took this frame. Now, given all the wars and attacks and gun violence and hate crimes in the years since, I see Jesus as more embarrassed than sad. We just don't learn, do we?
At the time, I was 22, a college senior, and full of optimism. I was driving from Ann Arbor to Santa Fe in hopes of landing a job with Outside Magazine. After a frigid night's sleep in my car near Tulsa, I decided to stop in Oklahoma City to see the National Memorial & Museum. Unforgettable. Standing in the footprint of the blast, feeling the force required to gut a nine-story building, gutted me too.
Summer 1994

3. Who took this photo?

I put the camera on my small camera bag on self-timer

4. What are we looking at here?

It was the first summer of several when we spent a few weeks in italy over the summer. It was just after the G-8 Summit in Naples, and several of our friends who were doing White House advance for that trip, stayed on, as we’d taken a wonderful house for the month of July. This village square, in the village near our rental house, became a very big part of our lives over those weeks. The old stone wall separated the elevated side of the town from the farm lands below. In back of me you see a stone bench, more or less reserved for the ‘good ole boys’ of the town. It was pretty clear we visitors were not welcome to sit on that particular bench.

5. How does this old photo make you
feel?

I love the grainy, very expected look of the frame. I don’t know if the age has something to do with the extra graininess, but it has a certain “not taken recently” look (but then so do my wife and I). And that, above all, is what b/w photography does to me. It emphasizes the time that has passed.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had no idea what was on the roll, and was kind of surprised to see something so unexpected as I was pretty good about getting film out of my bags, and to the lab. This roll obviously had a mind of it’s own for some twenty years.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

Just seeing those film camera slung over my shoulder is a reminder that film still has it’s place in photography.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

This isn’t a great ‘museum wall-worthy’ picture, but like so many of the lost rolls, I think the personal feeling involved is what makes these recovered images so interesting and at times powerful.
A "low light" exposure of the interior of my first apartment in Washington. It was in the attic of a row house near Chevy Chase Circle. The shadowy figure in the background is my brother Mason.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Mixed feelings of nostalgia and sadness. My brother Mason died 3 years ago; we shared the small apartment for about a year. It was my first "solo" apartment when working in DC at age 28, after several years of living with roommates in shared houses.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

No, I had no idea what to expect, and thought that I would have made a better image than this dark and obscure one, which at first I didn't recognize.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

It reminds me of urban living in Washington, DC, close to my family, and working downtown at a now-defunct government agency (Civil Aeronautics Board). I was sharing the apartment with my brother Mason and commuting to my job by bicycle. It was a small one-room space with a shared bathroom downstairs, so hot & stuffy in the summer (no A/C) that we sometimes would sleep on the roof! But I felt like I was living the good life there.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I think others would respond more to the memories than to the image, which is not good!

Yes, I was working for the Civil Aeronautics Board at the Universal Building on Connecticut Avenue, north of Dupont Circle in Washington, DC at the time. I used to bring my camera to work and would often spend my lunch hour walking the streets or sitting in the local park. But I don't remember why I took this picture.
We are at my brother Gary's house. We are hamming it up for the photo. I may be attempting to show a trick knot with the rope in my hands.

5. How does this old photo make you
feel?

Both my parents are gone now, so it's a bit sad to think about this photo. But it also makes me laugh to remember how we would ham it up for photos sometimes. We have a few other photos like this.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had not idea what was on this roll. It was about eight years old.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

This was probably the last roll of film my mother took. My dad died shortly after this photo (see my other submission) and Mom started drifting off into dementia after that.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I hope they get a laugh out of our antics, and make some crazy photos of their own families.

4. What are we looking at here?

We were on our honeymoon in Bali. We went to a dance performance one night and Julie couldn't stop taking pictures.

5. How does this old photo make you feel? *

It somehow feels more mysterious and unsettling than the actual event was at the time - it was quite a joyful performance as I remember.
No! - I thought all the film from this trip had been developed long ago.
My new wife, Julie.

4. What are we looking at here?

We have just gotten married and are on our honeymoon in Bali and Thailand. We went to Lembongan island on a whim, to disappear and do some diving. We're having an afternoon drink in some random place there...

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It's odd because I'm looking at myself through someone else's eyes. I can actually recall this exact moment but not the exact place we were in.
It made me very happy to see these - previously unseen images of a wonderful time.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It makes we want to go back to this magical village and landscape. It is a unique place that looks and feels like it is still the 19th Century.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I took these photos with a simple brownie camera, with only a shutter that flicked at a single speed. This image in particular is a double exposure, thus I had very little clue as to what these images would actually look like.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

Yes! This was my first trip out of the States. I am interested in the history of photography and historic processes and this was a dream come true to finally go to this place in the world.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?
I think others will be intrigued by the multiple exposure and also be intrigued by the architecture and empty space. It is mysterious and somewhat ominous.

This is probably the B Reactor, the first full scale production nuclear reactor in the world. It looks like I took the photo from the public highway looking down at the reactor which lies near the Columbia River. I'm guessing on the time frame but today the two water towers are not there anymore.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Nostalgic--I have worked at the Hanford site for nearly 37 years and even though I could see this old reactor almost daily for much of that time, it still brings back a wondering of what it would have been like to work at Hanford during the Manhattan Project during the war.
5. How does this old photo make you feel?

4. What are we looking at?
A display case promoting an upcoming showing of the film "Fiddler on the Roof." This display case is actually the old box office of the Paradise Theatre, a 1929 neighborhood movie palace. At the time I ran the theatre, the box office was no longer used to sell tickets and it served to promote upcoming events.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?
We were the last organization to show movies in the Paradise Theatre. After we closed it in 1996, the Paradise never showed another movie. Today it is part of a small chain of non-denominational churches.

6. Is this what you expected to see?
I am sorry that my pictures are so boring! I was worried this might be the case. But I appreciate very much that you developed them. I never would have. They were completely forgotten rolls, and I have no idea why I did not develop them at the time I took them.

7. Does this photo bring back memories?
Running the Paradise and showing classic movies for more than six years was wonderful experience, possibly the most fulfilling period of my life. There are many memories from this time, all of them positive to me now. I wish it could have gone on forever.

8. How do you think others will respond?
I don't know. I'd like people to get a feeling for this lost, wonderful community of film lovers that the Paradise Theatre brought into being. We showed everything we could get our hands on for six short years. There were plenty of classical hollywood films, a few foreign films, some exceptionally rare silent films, and a few marginal musicals like Fiddler. We had fantastic projection and sound equipment loaned to us by a booster in Chicago. There are not many people alive today who have projected 70mm changeovers, and maybe just a few more who would know what that means. But I am one of them!

I had no expectation. I knew it had been at least 12 years since I'd used a film camera. I used to take two cameras with me on trips, one for color and one for black and white. I couldn't remember the last occasion when I took photos with film.

7. Does this photo bring back any memories?

I remember trying to take the whole landscape in, wanting to take home proof that I had been there. It was only my second trip out west and, having spent my whole life in South Florida, the different elevations and textures and colors had my attention.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?
Many people will probably find the rock formation common place. I hope that some will notice that, though the rock seems still and immobile, it has experienced both violent upheaval and gentle, persistent erosion by water and wind.

It was July 2004 and I recently bought my first big motorcycle, a black 2003 Victory Classic Cruiser, 1507 cubic centimeters of pure power. It was which handled beautifully despite its weight of 700 pounds. After a couple of days riding with my Colorado high school friends, I headed to Ouray to ride in the Southwest Victory Riders Rally. The ride went from Ouray to Durango. The total distance was only 70 miles but it was through some of the most beautiful scenery in Colorado. I thought I could handle it with no problem. I forgot that this route included the Million Dollar Highway, a narrow two-lane road that featured many switchback curves, no shoulders and sheer drop-offs. This 25 mile stretch is rated one of the most dangerous roads in the world. http://www.dangerousroads.org/north-america/usa/635-million-dollar-highway-usa.html. It is a perfect example of why Coloradans say there are no guardrails, the tourists keep knocking them down. These pictures were taken during a much needed break after the dangerous stretch of road to let my heart stop racing. This beautiful mountain valley overlooked several mountains including the ones I had just traversed.
8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Captures rural America at the time. The graininess of the photo with subtle clues to the era really drive the point of the Lost Rolls program; we took the pictures hoping to capture a moment in time that we wished to remember.

Unavoidable. Anyone who was alive during that time has their own memories, but this a few days after the attack and the enormity of it all really sunk in as I walked around.
I think they will feel as moved as I was when I saw these men. I am not religious, but I could understand the need for a prayer.
