• When was the photo taken?
1994

Where was the photo taken?
Santa Cruz, CA?

Who took the photo?
Ali Pomeroy

What are we looking at?
It's not clear. My wife, who I'm pretty sure took the photo, is deceased. She was a great & enthusiastic baker. Based on the context of the other photos in the roll, I think she took this while visiting her oldest friend Catherine at grad school.

Catherine & her husband think they probably made a fruit tart together, & cookies with the leftover dough. But they really have no memory of it.

How does this old photo make you feel?
Ali died 7 years ago, & this photo was taken many years before that—in fact, shortly before I met her. I'm happy remembering the many things she made, and thinking about the fun and creative time she and Catherine probably had putting this tart together. But it's of course also sad: I'll never have a tart from Ali again.

Is this what you expected to see?
I really had no idea. We found this camera when cleaning out the house prior to a renovation. It was a Lomo that Ali got on a trip to Austria where she met (and dated?) a Lomo enthusiast. I'm just glad there were some viewable images to bring back a little moment of her to me.

What kind of memories does this photo bring back?
It makes me think of Ali in the kitchen, baking. Sometimes I would help her design or present her work, & I also learned a lot from her about how to be flexible and intuitive in cooking (even though baking is known to require precision).

She wasn't always happy when baking. If things went wrong Ali could get frustrated, and she'd curse a lot. But ultimately she loved doing it and sharing her love and talents with her family and friends.

How do you think others will respond to this photo?
It's very hard to say. I don't know what people will see in this, literally or otherwise. The difficulty of making out what's in the photo perhaps makes it feel like a memory, which may give it a little emotional punch.

 • When was the photo taken?
1994

Where was the photo taken?
Santa Cruz, CA

Who took the photo?
Michael Millner

What are we looking at?
This is a photo of my late wife Ali (right) and her oldest friend Catherine. Ali is visiting Catherine and Michael, who were in graduate school across the country, where Ali and Catherine grew up.

Ali is wearing Catherine's sweater.

How does this make you feel?
It triggers my grief for Ali, who died 7 years ago. This picture is from a few months before I met Ali in 1995. It feels like a doubly-lost world: you can never really know what your love's life was like before you met, & when your love dies the knowledge and memories you do have gradually slip from your grasp.

The blurry, washed-out quality of the photo feels like a reflection of that feeling.

Did you expect to see this?
I really had no idea. I found the camera as we were cleaning out my house in advance of a renovation with my new wife. It's a Lomo camera I knew Ali had gotten on a trip to Austria before we met.

There are only a few legible exposures on the roll. I wonder if there are other photos that were destroyed by a light leak, or if she never took other photos.

What kind of memories does this bring back?
It's a small window into a time for which I have no memories of my own. But it also makes me think of times we spent together when we were both young, & had no children, & traveled to see friends on our own. And it makes me think of the strong bond between Ali & Catherine.

Catherine said she's always hoping to find one more note from Ali, and this feels like the closest thing she'll get.

How do you think others will respond to the photo?
Gosh I don't know. There is something intimate in the way Catherine holds Ali close. I hope they will grasp a little of how close these two people were. If they know the whole story it could make them feel like Catherine is still holding onto Ali, even after she's gone.
Who took this photo?
My mom (most likely)

What are we looking at here?
outtake of a family photo for my birthday

How does this old photo make you feel?
it gives me a warm at-home feeling. a good portion of the people in this photo are gone so to see their faces again brings me back to when I was a kid, smothered with love by my grandparents and aunts/uncles.

Is this what you expected to see?
In a way yeah, I expected that these older rolls would have photos of my grandparents in them. I wasn't expecting them to be of my birthday.

What kind of memories does this photo bring back?
it brings back good memories. My definition of family has been changing over the last few years and this reminds me of what it used to be, but also how much more fractured it feels now. Especially with the people who have passed away appearing altogether in this photo.

How do you think others will respond to this photo?
I showed the photo to my mom who was the one who captured it. She was overjoyed, tears in her eyes.
Maine

Who took this photo?

Most likely my Niece

What are we looking at here?

A lake in Maine where we spent a week one summer. I was using a waterproof camera and it leaked, and damaged the film. (which looks quite amazing on the rest of the roll) This looks like it was my niece taking a selfie with it.

How does this old photo make you feel?

Well, in the end it's not THAT old but it makes me feel happy. That was a great week spent with family. And I LOVE this photo, damaged and all - her smile makes me smile.

Is this what you expected to see?

Yes - I never processed these rolls because I knew they were damaged, I'm surprised that most of the film came out but even more surprised & excited by the way the damaged film looks.

What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Happy ones, relaxing ones... I wish I was there right now!

How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Not really sure, seems like just a damaged film snapshot. But the damage almost enhances the feeling of it being a memory, like it's slowly washing away.

What are we looking at here?

The summer before I started college I hiked to the top of timpanogos mountain with my parents. This is my mother standing on the very windy mountain saddle.

How does this old photo make you feel?

I feel like I have hardly aged since then. It feels like I took that photo yesterday. Though, I like who I am a lot more now.

Is this what you expected to see?

I had no idea this photo was on there.

What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

This was a very long and strenuous hike. On the way down the mountain, as we were hiking through lush green trees, spotting several moose, I kept thinking that the car was just around the next bend. It was not.

How do you think others will respond to this photo?

It is a fun photo! I think it is visually interesting.
New Year's Eve at Sammy's Roumanian, NYC

In this photo - my parents, my ex & a friend

How does this old photo make you feel?

That was a really fun night with my family and our friends so it makes me smile, but I chose this one in particular because the guy in the plaid shirt was my ex and he just passed away a few months ago, so there is a little bit of bittersweet feeling as well.

Is this what you expected to see?

Not at all

What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Our family would go to Sammy's for special occasions and get trashed. Most of this roll came back blurry and I can't figure out if it was because I shot it that way on purpose, which I did a lot of during this time, or if I was just really drunk. That night ended with me, my sister, my mom & another friend doing "girl shots" of frozen vodka (a Sammy's specialty). My mom (who was around the same age that I am now) thought that was the best thing on earth and still talks about "girl shots". It was a great night, so happy to see these.

How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Not really sure - probably "what's up w this blurry photo" but I find there is some mystery to it, maybe they will see that as well.

You are looking at my father standing on a boat dock at Desert Shores , California which is located on the south shore of the Salten Sea.

How does this old photo make you feel?

The picture reminds me of my dad and the wonderful times we shared at the Salton Sea. The Salton Sea was our forever favorite place in the world. My dad loved every minute he as there. I miss my dad very much!

Is this what you expected to see?

No, I did not expect to see this picture . The roll of film was actually in another person's camera. He only learned what was on the roll when he submitted roll to Lostrolls. Joe contacted me asking if I knew what the pictures were.

What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

The picture brings back memories of my dad. It also returns me to a very happy time in my life that i was lucky enough to share with my dad.

How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I do not think people will understand what emotions go with the picture, I think they will just think it is a picture of a man standing on a dock.
Is this what you expected to see?

Not at all, but the film was stuck in the camera for years with a dead battery. The film wouldn't advance till one day after seeing the Lost Rolls idea.

What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

It reminds me of my Great Grandmother. The thunder jug is what you use as a bathroom in the middle of the night, instead of going to the outhouse, especially in bad weather. The jug has a lid and is kept under the bed. How different life is here today.

How do you think others will respond to this photo?
I hope it makes people smile and think how easy we have it (at least here is the US) with indoor plumbing.

This is a 36" pond yacht. The sails and rudder are radio controlled. The wind is what makes it move. It is part of a building/sailing class at the WoodenBoat School in Brooklin, Maine.
I have boats that I need to sail. Fond memories of a great school and wonderful people. Kind of sad too since the man who owned the pond has passed and his wife has moved.
How do you think others will respond to this photo?
I think folks will like the calming nature of this picture. It will make them be curious about pond yachts.

Rather somber, I always liked this monument and its feeling of grief and loss. It seems rather telling for this year (2021) and the losses we have all been experiencing with the epidemic.

Is this what you expected to see?

I can't really say I was surprised, it was from one of the places I would go for walks when I lived in Chicago. It was taken with an old roll of film, maybe 30 years old, with one of my father's old cameras he probably bought when he was in Japan during the Korean War.

What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

just memories of being alone when I lived in Chicago.

How do you think others will respond to this photo?
What are we looking at here?

This is a photo of my wife soon after she was born with her mother and farther, and one other unidentified woman.

How does this old photo make you feel?

I am just surprised, not at all what I thought I was sending in. At first I did not know who these people were, but when I enlarged the photo the woman on the left sort of looked like my wife. And then I realized it was mother-in-law and father-in-law. We still do know who the woman in the middle is, both of my in-laws have passed away, my mother-in-law just three months ago.

Is this what you expected to see?

No not at all, this is truly a "lost roll". This roll must have gotten mixed in with an old roll that was my father's, and one I shot with my father's camera, after my father-in-law passed away about five years ago.

What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Just total surprise, it was so funny to be seeing this after so many years, I wish I would have sent the roll in sooner so my mother-in-law could have seen it.

How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Who took this photo?

What are we looking at here?

My lost roll contained just two photos, taken in 2015, at a new year’s eve party hosted by a dear friend and neighbor, Dita Brodin. I found the camera with the undeveloped film after her death on April 7, 2020 at the age of 89. Dita was of Hungarian decent, born in NYC at Lenox Hill Hospital and then in 1938 her family moved to London when she was 7 years old. In 1940 Dita’s father was sent by government officials to the Isle of Man. Dita and her sister Katherina (Kiki) were sent to be boarded and educated at a convent escaping Germany’s blitzkrieg. Her father was eventually released after the authorities determined that he was not a threat. He went on to develop the Chromart process for color photography.

How does this old photo make you feel?

While in their twenties Dita and her sister Kiki moved to NYC. Dita married the love of her life Walter and after some traveling they settled in a suburb in New Jersey. As one can see from the photos, the house was decorated in grand fashion with artifacts collected during Dita’s travels. Dita had a personality that was larger than life, a gifted conversationalist, and very well read.

Is this what you expected to see?

The photos were a surprise. I expected a blank roll.

What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Dita was considered a baroness but had zero regard for titles. Above all, she valued friends and neighbors and was dedicated to caring for animals and supporting their causes. She appreciated the love she received and returned it two-fold.

How do you think others will respond to this photo?

These photos are a tribute to Dita's next door neighbors Rita and Louis Labrutto, seated to her left and right in the photo. They cared for Dita after her husband passed away in 2003. It was a fantastic show of neighborly love and devotion.

This is a photo from the set of vacation photos that I took during a stay at my friend Taylor's lake house. This is one of my friends flipping the tube on the back of the boat while my other friends look on.

How does this old photo make you feel?

It makes me nostalgic for the time where my friends and I were either in college or just out - with less responsibilities and more opportunities to get together to take road trips or spend the summers however we wanted.

Is this what you expected to see?

I thought that there were some pictures from this specific trip on the roll I submitted, but I was excited to see that I was able to capture a clear action shot that tells a small story within the final image.

What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I have great memories of the trip, similar trips I've taken over the years, and that summer in general. For a while we used to go up most summer to my friend's lake house and this set definitely brings back memories of taking the boat out to the middle of the lake and just spending the day anchored while we swam in the water, drank some and had fun.

How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I picked this photo out of all others in the set because you can't see anyone's faces, and it more focuses on the moment and general feelings of spending time on the lake in the summer, rather that being just a vacation photo. Hopefully it will bring back someone's similar memories of good times spent with their friends on vacation or make them curious about the subjects of the photo.
Our neighborhood used to have a kids' parade every Fourth of July. The kids would decorate their bikes and wagons, the Fire Department would bring a fire truck to lead the parade, and we would walk through the parking lot at John Strange School, just a few blocks from our house. Our kids were about 2 and 7 at the time ... now they're 17 and 22.

How does this old photo make you feel?

First, delighted to see my kids as little ones! And happy to see old friends and a great neighborhood tradition. But then a little sad: As the families in this group got older, no others picked up responsibility for the tradition, so the annual parade is no more. And the school, which both kids attended, is closing.

Is this what you expected to see?

I had no idea what to expect ... I had feared the roll might be boring, mundane work photos or something ... so my wife and I were pleasantly surprised!
As soon as I saw the photo I could see her four year old daughter: the expression, the posture, the hands. I know what it would feel like to pick up this child right now. It's like we develop muscle memory when we parent. Our bodies know how to hold a child. Our senses are tuned into how they smell, feel, respond to us.
What are we looking at here?

When our three daughters were between the ages of 4 and 11, as they are here, we lived in upstate New York and went to the city to visit my parents who lived on Long Island. It was If it was baseball season the girls always got to go to Yankee Stadium and it's with their dad that they learned to score the game, identify teams and enjoy the sounds and excitement of the ball park.

How does this old photo make you feel?

Looking at this photo today during the 2020 pandemic I am reminded how much of city life and the joy of visiting the city is wrapped up in the excitement of being in crowds. Will we ever know this feeling again?

Is this what you expected to see?

I didn't have any idea what would be on this roll of film. The quality doesn't surprise me because this roll sat around for over 30 years waiting to be developed. A reminder of how expensive it was to use film and have prints developed and how digital photography has changed all that.

What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

The girls loved these outings to baseball games. I didn't always go and suspect that I wasn't there that day. Greg, the girls' dad, loved baseball and made sure the girls loved it, too. It was their thing and when opening day came where we lived in upstate NY I heard that he would pick them up at school and sign them out for dental appointments, then drive up to the stadium for the opening day game. It was their "secret" annual tradition.
Sad and happy. She passed in 2001 at the age of 98. I miss her. I was named after her husband Aristide Mian who was a Parisian sculptor. She was a writer for the New Yorker magazine and they were an art couple living in France and then after WWII in Nyack, NY, and then moving to Santa Fe, NM. I feel I got my art background from him and she was very supportive in my career. I was the only one of my siblings and cousins who followed in the arts. I'm happy that this roll has been founded and developed!
My career had just started so I remember the confidence I was getting starting to freelance for the Washington Post and others. It was the first time I was making a significant amount of money and living at home. Within a year I had left Washington to purse a staff newspaper position out of state. This time frame was the last time I was living at home with parents other than just visiting so it has special meaning especially since my mother is turning 81 this year and her health is not as good.
This photo makes me feel both sad and hopeful. I took this picture during an Easter weekend of soul searching . . . was I actually going to move from West Texas to New York City? (By August of that same year, I was living in Brooklyn. I had no job and knew 2 people). Thirteen years later, I am still in Brooklyn! I miss that girl who would just up and decide to move! It was wonderful, though, to be reminded of her and that part of my spirit.
This image is of Randall Gorby at his home in West Virginia. I stopped off to see him on my way from Missouri, where I'd just graduated from journalism school, to El Salvador to start a career as a freelance reporter. The Gorby home had been a refuge for me since I was introduced to Randall and his family on my first journey into Appalachia ten years before. Randall was a charismatic, larger-than-life character. War veteran, steelworker, union organizer, commune host, father, husband, friend to the downtrodden and to any stranger who appeared at his door.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Getting to know Randall, his wife Irmgard, and their children was a transformative experience for me. I feel sadness and a sense of loss. Randall is gone. So too is that magical time, that magical place. But It also makes me feel grateful that I found my way there through a series of decisions and coincidences.

6. Is this what you expected to see?
Not at all, I was completely surprised to find these images from West Virginia, especially this one of my old friend and mentor Randall Gorby.
7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I feel a sense of wonder and amazement remembering my early experiences traveling on my own for the first time into an unfamiliar place. And how I was welcomed like an old and trusted friend into the homes of folks who did not know me.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I hope others will experience a hint of the depth of Randall Gorby's humanity in this image. The kitten behind him lends a slightly ironic twist to the photo. Randall is clearly oblivious to its presence. But it seems to underscore his generosity of spirit that, like the cat, he is not consciously aware of.

This image is of our much-beloved cat "Gus-Gus" (1998-2017). Like his composer namesake, Gustav Mahler, he was truly one of the greats! "Gus is people," we'd always say, and his outsized personality really shines in this photo. What a treasure to see him again appearing in these lost rolls! "May your symphony continue to play on, Gus-Gus!"

While I was running the Philadelphia Marathon, my husband took this picture of our two sons (on the right) alongside their two cousins (on the left). They were waiting to see me at the 20-mile mark in Manayunk.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Well, nostalgic, of course. But on a deeper level, it makes me think about memories from a kid's point of view because the image captures how ordinary - okay, boring - the event was for them. You'd never know these kids were at an event with cheering spectators lined up along this part of the marathon route if it weren't for the runner reflected in the store front window. To me, that is the essence of childhood. The stuff that matters to an adult just isn't a big deal for a kid.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

No. This surprised me completely. Of course, I wasn't there at that particular moment when the photo was taken. But even so, I doubt my husband even noticed the reflection in the window.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

It brings back all those tender memories of our sons at those busy, but really precious growing years. It also reminds me how much older and out of shape I'm in! Bleh!! ;)

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I'm not sure. When I try to look at the photo as if I don't know the kids in it, I still definitely see their personalities - from the extraverted older two, to our more introverted younger son, to our easy-going younger niece who could make a game out of a candy wrapper. More so, I just feel their boredom, that kid-like impatience. It's as if each by their facial expression and/or body language are saying, "This is a total drag. Can we go now?"
Chandler Griffin

4.What are we looking at here?

A portrait of Anwar Jaramogi I made while studying Photography and Film at Savannah College of Art & Design. Anwar and I were in the film program and I asked if I could take his portrait. In school I focused on 4x5 or 8x10 landscapes, not portraits. This was the only time I used the 11x14. For whatever reason, the film was never processed.

5.How does this old photo make you feel?

I'm not sure why I kept this huge box of undeveloped film for two decades. Maybe objects follow us around hoping to be rescued. After 20+ years in the elements the image has fogged. A halo effect follows the curve of his head… energy radiating up and out. In profile with his eyes closed, he seems in thoughtful prayer. Anwar was someone I knew but was not close with. He was that person you wanted to know, which is probably why I photographed him. I’m drawn to his closed eye. I imagine the sound of him slowly breathing in through his nose.

6.Is this what you expected to see?

I vaguely remember using the 11x14 camera and I remembered his face, but not his name. I have no memory why I photographed him with eyes closed in profile.

7.What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I remember walking through Bergen Hall, the photo building at SCAD. Get off the elevator on the 3rd floor, walk straight head, take a left and quick right into the 11x14 studio. A heavy black curtain opened to massive window light facing east. Long nights in private darkrooms mixing GAF 135 developer and printing images on Forte Warm Tone paper. Pulling liquid platinum with a brayer across a piece of paper in the Alt Process lab.

8.How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Hopefully others feel peace. The image reminds me to stop, feel and breathe from the heart up and out through the head.
They won't care. It's just a guy, playing with a cat, and no one looks particularly great.
People queue for gas in the shortages following the 1999 Kosovo War.
5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Certainly another era is upon us. I was glad to have captured what was going on and not often seen elsewhere.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I spent much of the 1990s photographing ceremonies in Africa. I thought the 50 rolls of undeveloped film I have are of those ceremonies. I was happily surprised to find 20-year old images of Serbia.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Slobodan Milosevic threw Serbia into chaos by driving to war in Kosovo. The already weak economy of this pariah country (not a member of the UN or other international bodies) experienced isolation and hyper-inflation. People struggled for basic daily needs. This was the last weekend of a 2-month lull after the war and the renewed start to opposition to Milosevic.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

People will be curious about content and context. Why only young men only seem to be queuing? Can we learn anything about them from their gestures and interactions?

4. What are we looking at here?

Nevena Antonijevic holds her 8th grade graduation photo on a visit to her Dad in the last summer doldrum of 1999. The Kosovo War has just ended and the opposition to the government of Slobodan Milosevic is about to restart in a pariah country isolated and estranged from much of the world.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

I feel a sense of accomplishment that I was able to capture the times and emotions as the country swayed from crisis to crisis. This was the last interlude - "coming up for air" I called it - between the major tumult of the Kosovo War 2 months earlier and the start of renewed opposition that month. We soon headed back to the capital and events were intense for the next 14 months. Nevena and I married 2 months later in Belgrade in the midst of mounting protest and turmoil.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I have 50 rolls of exposed film that I best recall as images of African Ceremonies I shot across the continent in the 1990s. I had no clue, and am happily surprised to learn, that some of the rolls are from the end of the Milosevic era - which I documented from Belgrade in tens of thousands of photos from 1997 through 2001.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

"Coming up for air" - the peaceful moments between tumult; Nevena's family gathering in the yard. Trying to get around to visit them in a country without much gas.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?
People may feel as if they know something about her from this pensive moment. I welcome reactions as a photograph, like a person, is multi-dimensional.

This is an exboyfriend and a cow. haha. We had gone up to Rockhill Creamery (Farm) for the weekend to visit a friend who was working there. We had a lovely time exploring the farm, meeting all the cows, and having a delicious meal in the barn.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

This feels like a lifetime ago! Looking through these forgotten photos flooded me with a rush of emotions, they brought back so many memories and adventures.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had no idea what was going to be on this old roll of film that was still in my Holga camera. I didn't know how many years old the photos would be, but I assumed there would probably

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

This photo brings back some really great memories with this exboyfriend. While we are both in better places now, we had many years of fun and adventure together, which I look back on fondly.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Because of the Holga photo, the black and white film, the lighting, and probably the fact that the film is quite old, the whole photo looks quite blurry. While others may just see a blurry cow and man, I see a long-ago adventure with a long-lost love.

Somewhere in the Basque Country in Spain

3. Who took this photo?

I did.

4. What are we looking at here?

The girls pictured are the nieces of my then boyfriend (who would later become a celebrated filmmaker; Spain's Goya-decorated, national treasure). These little girls used to call me 'tía' all those years ago. I loved them. Our summer days were filled with pretend play and song and dance and I thought that they would always be in my life. And then for reasons I barely understand even today, I ran.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Wistful. Hailing from a small, complicated family back in my native lower Manhattan, my then boyfriend's carefree, loving family in Spain was to me the stuff of mythology. Quickly I became enmeshed in the fabric of this family; their otherworldliness was the antidote to my own life back in New York.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

No. The old roll of Tr-X that had taken up residence in my drawer for nearly 30 years always dared me to imagine. I never planned to develop it. I assumed if there was anything on the roll, it would either be something innocuous, like pictures of my grandmother or something embarrassing, like theatrical, nude self portraits. I might have taken pictures like that back then.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

The photos bring back a memory of time and a place, but more than that, they remind me of way I looked at the world as a young woman on the cusp of adulthood. These photos provoke a strong sense of longing in me; for youth and the illusion of its endless possibilities.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Behind these pictures of lost 'relatives' & girlish rapture is a young woman behind the camera, consumed by passion & uncertainty. But without the background, without the context, I am not really sure what people will see or how they will respond

My brother passed away last week and our mother in 2009. I'm feeling wistful. And grateful the project was able to convert a very unusual format of film.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

This roll was found in an old camera among our mother's things so I couldn't be sure what it contained. There are four frames and three are of her favorite pet. Even so this one is more interesting.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Arg of all the memories in that kitchen., including all the dishes I washed in that sink and the one before it, of her powerful factory foreman arms, and that I used that very same spatula this morning.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?
It probably won't be interesting to others, especially as mom's eyes are closed.
4. What are we looking at here?

This is a view of rooftops in Chinatown with the San Francisco Bay in the distance. You'll notice two Taiwanese flags and a building dated 1920 with a Chinese style pagoda roof and painted balcony typical of the time.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It makes me a little nostalgic for City College's old satellite campuses. They were very run down but full of character. We now have a big, modern multistory building, which definitely facilitates teaching and the learning process, but sometimes I miss the cozy chaos of the old buildings.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

No -- I'd completely forgotten I'd taken these photos.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

It makes me remember teaching ESL to packed classes of primarily Chinese students. There was often a sense of barely managed chaos in these classes for reasons I've never quite understood, I could never get a good 50% of the large classes to follow directions. Despite, or maybe because of this, it brings a smile to my face because we usually ended up having fun and I managed to teach something despite the seeming disorder. No matter how many times I taught there and because I am not Chinese, I still always felt a small charge of excitement when entering Chinatown as an instructor -- that small sense of wonder that accompanies traveling to a new culture.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I think perhaps it will inspire some curiosity, where is this? It might also provide that sense of an insider's view that one cannot get from the street in a dense city. It is only when you enter one of the buildings and look out a back window that you are able to see the intimacies of daily life such as rooftop laundry juxtaposed with a more familiar skyline.
Double exposure on medium format film, probably made on my Holga.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

I don't remember these moments but I do remember the experience of deciding to just make images that may or may not turn out. My boyfriend at the time gave me a handful of expired film so I felt really free to mess around and let go of control over how the images turned out. I love how the double exposure works together and the mood the image evokes.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

Not at all. I don't remember these particular images and I didn't take notes to see what my double exposures were. Or at least, if I did, I have no idea where I put them. I did have a sense that it was an intimate roll of film that I had made. I'm super excited to see the work years later. So much mystery and the magic of waiting for development is lost with digital photography.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I'm reminded of that time in my life where I was on my last 2 months of living in Asheville and I'd been there for 8 years. I was about to move back home to Portland, OR to develop my work after college so that I could have a new body of work to apply for an MFA. I didn't know what was next for me or my art practice. This was a moment where I was experimenting with my body and the landscape in such an intuitive way. Reminds me of how I want to work that way now instead of getting too stuck in conceptual ideas around the work. Just go and make and see what happens. Play more.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

The image opens up a lot of questions of what exactly we're looking at and I hope that it evokes a bit of mystery and a sense of mood that the viewer will impose on it.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?
Protesters burning voting materials during a boycott of the state elections in Tixtla, Guerrero, Mexico. The year before, 43 students from a college in this town were kidnapped and disappeared by police, and they still hadn’t been found.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It’s painful. It reminds me of the torment of the missing students’ friends and families, who still have no answers. And a feeling of lost hope — the case caused such huge protests against corruption and the Drug War that change seemed possible, but the violence has only gotten worse. 2017 was Mexico’s deadliest year on record.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I remember kneeling in front of the fire to make this picture. It looks just the way I imagined it, but I'd given up on ever seeing it. At the time I was doing a project on the missing students, and when I developed the film, all the rolls were accounted for but this one. I looked for it everywhere and thought it had been lost.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

The tense days before the elections, rumors circulating that the army was going to repress the protests. In the end a young man was shot in a nearby town. His funeral is burned in my memory. But this picture is personal for me now in a way I didn’t expect. My future husband, a Mexican photographer, is just outside the frame. This was where we first met. Months later we became friends, and a year after this was taken he flew to New York to tell me how he felt.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I think some people will be drawn to the image because you can sense the unrest behind it. For those who have some connection to or knowledge of Mexico, it might stir up deeper emotions about the trauma its people are facing.

No! I forgot that I was marveling at the corners of my fathers house that are so beautifully lit up during the day time by a big bay window in his living room and the antiques on his mantel that bounce light beautifully throughout the room.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

It brings back memories of living with my father when I was younger. It makes me think of him and appreciate his home and the stability he has provided for me.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I think others may be confused at what they are looking at first because of the way I have abstractly composed the photograph and the space. But that is why I chose the photo because one must look more deeply into the image and search more intimately for the discovery of what is captured. Take a second or third glance at the image to make out what it is or use your imagination to create your own interpretation of the domestic forms. I appreciate an intimate response to my photography.

This is an attempt at a self-portrait. I had these braids put in, actually extensions to my hair, in Haiti. Took about 14 hours and two days. I'm trying to take my own picture with my DSLR, against the wall in the back of my building.

2. Where was this photo taken?

Top of Mount Timpanogos, Utah

3. Who took this photo?

I did!

4. What are we looking at here?

Three mountains goats grazing on wild flowers and grass at the top of Timp. The cliff in the background was created by a glacier moving down the mountainside.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Homesick. Growing up, I felt this mountain was an integral part of my internal and external landscape. Timpanogos watched over me as I climbed the cherry tree in our backyard, as I fought with boys who didn't let me play soccer with them, as I hiked with my highschool friends, as I snowboarded down her slopes. Seeing this picture makes me very very sad I live so far away from this mountain, and thankful that I did live in her shadow for my childhood.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had no idea what was on this roll. In retrospect I'm not surprised I took this photo because I have other developed rolls from this 3-day hike.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Seeing this photo reminds me of the little tin shack we slept in the night before this was taken. It was reasonably warm inside and we slept well, until around 5 in the morning when a sound like thunder and a million pots and pans being dropped at the same time startled us awake. We could see through the doorway that the sun was emerging and the sky was clear, so no thunder. Outside the shack we found half a dozen mountain goats running over a corrugated metal sheet from the shack. The goats were unfazed by us for the entirety of our stay on the mountain.

I hope people think of how many beautiful places there are just outside the reach of human control.

4. What are we looking at here?

I believe this is Nicaragua, one of three trips I took in 1987/88-- a festival in a rural area...

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

As I still take images of cultural activities in the countryside of less documented regions, I don't feel old, only I wish I could remember exactly where I took this image...

6. Is this what you expected to see?

This was part of a roll of this rural festival which also included a number of greasy pole shots (I had to make a choice, which to send, but would be happy to send my favorite of the greasy pole.. obviously a contest of who can climb the greasy pole). This photograph of a dance exhibition was taken in an area somewhat remote and makes its celebratory essence so meaningful and evocative.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I love the reminder of these travels even if I don't exactly remember where I took this photo. I took three trips to Nicaragua in the late 80s. One traveling around the country, the other two to a remoted region on the Atlantic Coast, which included a couple day stay on a more remote sub-island traveled there by dugout canoe.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?
A festival that includes regional dance always is uplifting.

I had no idea that this roll--documenting this seminar—was included in the rolls that were my lost/developed film.
7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I was relatively new with my involvement with Haitian culture, and I went to this seminar for one day. Participants were very generous with my naiveté. Subsequently, I've had more exposure to vodou practices and now understand what I'm looking at in this picture.
Various textural and lighting photos utilizing long in camera exposures.
Incorporating a dadaist theory of random creation of the image; not knowing what I had captured until the film was developed at the lab.
Which made much more exciting than shooting digitally.

My parents drove up to help me make the move and clean the apartment. We packed everything up and slept together on the floor.
It makes me feel wistful. I was meeting Nancy's family for the first time and over the decades to follow they became my family. I feel the passage of time acutely. My in-laws passed away many years ago, my nephew Matt is grown with kids of his own, and our youth is behind us.
8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?
I think people will notice the concentration of a little boy with an electronic toy -- something that looks very contemporary with today's cell phone's. Yet the hair, glasses, and electronics in the background are very 1980's.

A memorial sculpture of Chief Rotaynah, dedicated to the Native Americans of Ohio. The photo was taken by my wife Nancy when we were visiting old friends of hers in Akron, and went to see this sculpture with their two young children, who can be seen in the photo, along with their father.

It is touching to see this image from so long ago of friends we have stayed close with over the years. Indeed, just a few years ago, we went to the wedding of the young girl seen in the photo—now a woman in her 30s with an infant daughter of her own.
This is a photo of the bridge in Central Park as seen from the row boat that I was in. It was a beautiful, relaxing day with my boyfriend who is now my husband of 30 years. This was just a fleeting moment captured on film -- a couple on the bridge as we rowed underneath.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It brings back very happy memories of the fun and promise of a new relationship. I also recall how much I enjoyed Central Park as a place to escape the hustle and bustle of New York City, which was my home at the time. I'm very glad for this happy glimpse of my past.

This is a photo of "The Marlboro Man" billboard that was the iconic image for advertising cigarettes before it was illegal to promote smoking.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Surprised. I didn't remember driving through this part of California.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had written "Marlboro Man" on the roll and expected that it was the billboard on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood!

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

My husband and I, with our one-year-old daughter, were driving along Highway 395 through the Owens Valley. This sparks a happy memory of a gathering of cousins in Lake Tahoe, from which we were returning to Los Angeles. Passing through the little town of Lone Pine, the billboard caught my eye and we pulled over to take photos.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

The response of others looking at this photo will depend on the viewer's age. Younger people may find the image confusing and perhaps be surprised that advertising cigarettes was once allowed on billboards. Older people may find it nostalgic since the rugged "Marlboro Man" was part of such a long and consistent ad campaign.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?
The photograph evokes nostalgic feelings of a time before I was born, and a place both far away yet familiar and local.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

The blurriness was, at first, an unwelcome surprise. I also don't recall taking this photograph, even though the subject matter is certainly the kind of landscape I gravitate towards.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I am recalling why I was drawn to this scene - something about the way the sunlight fell through the trees on to the old car. I was visiting Portland for the first time and walking through neighborhoods, away from the tourist centers as I usually try to do when traveling, made me feel like I was able to see the city in a more unique light.

When I look at this photo, I can't believe how terrible the lighting is, and yet it made me so happy. I took this at the beginning of my photography career. This was my first documentary project and I remember struggling with the low light but refusing to switch to digital.

The memories I associate with this photo are mixed. I was just starting to photograph so I was nervous but eager to experiment. I spent all my free nights at this bar snapping photographs of people that interested me. I met so many people at this bar that I still keep in touch with. I was ready to learn, ready to meet people, ready to go home with anyone that asked. I was so uncertain back then but incredibly happy.
It makes me smile. Joel's always playing and being silly -- one of the funniest, most energetic people I know; and he's still the same 14 years later. He's a modern, urban sprite, and I love his energy.
6. Is this what you expected to see?

It brings back memories of heading down to Half Moon Bay with Joel, his wife, Carol, my housemate, Marty, and other friends ... having drinks at the Moss Beach Distillery ... taking walks at the beach, laughing, playing, being silly. The truth, though, is that these memories are still being made 14 years later -- except for a wrinkle or two and gray hair here and there (and a new pair of glasses, though a similar style), really not a whole lot has changed -- this is what impresses me the most.
3. Who took this photo?

4. What are we looking at here?

This is a photograph of my daughter Flora, when she was about 5 years old. (She just turned 18 this year-2018)
I have taken hundreds of photos of her in this exact spot, her spot at the dining room table. The light in the dining room is always beautiful in the morning and late afternoon and it's always been my sweet spot for pics of my kids.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

I feel so nostalgic for when she was a little girl, and when I was able to take photos of her without much complaint. In fact she always seemed to enjoy it- never complained about being my muse, but now she almost always refuses to let me take her photo. We call her Flora 'nofoto'.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had no idea what to expect in these rolls, whether they were for work or just family life. I am not surprised that this photo was there, as it is in my typical sweet light spot at home. There were a few surprises though. One roll had a friend on it who has since died. It was very sad to see these faded old rolls of this beautiful day on the beach with my friend's family.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

This photo brings back such waves of nostlgia when my kids were young, so sweet and innocent and happy go lucky. It brings me back to every evening as we sat around the table over dinner, but I wonder now what I missed by taking so many photos of them- and maybe not being present in the conversation or moment. Light distracts me in every way.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I think others will see also see it as a nostalgic family moment. A bit of faded family history. It is personal, obviously taken in a home. It is a bit mysterious as Flora looks serious but not unhappy.

Some might think "Why did he take this?". Others might wonder if they are looking at a near mound or hillside or at a faraway mountain taken on earth or possibly by a mars rover. The photograph purposely poses more questions than it answers.

Seeing the photograph brings back memories of that entire day where we hiked and I did photography. It's a small touchstone of our past life - a reaffirmation that reliving the past enriches the present.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I think that viewers will respond to the asymmetry of the composition and the shifting focus between the woman, the hillside, and the cactus.

Nostalgic for the calm, light, and air that is particular to Italy and that moment.

I remember the lake, I forgot about the boat! I more often shoot black and white so the way the film captured colors is unexpected.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Shot a lot of film over the course of driving almost 2,000 kilometers from South of France to Prague, this was one night along the way. Amazing location for camping on Lake Cuomo under the stars.
8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Maybe it will bring back thoughts of being in a similar place or landscape.

This is my grandfather's youngest sister, Dolores, and my grandparents Catherine and Stanley Tarquinio. Considered the unofficial town historian because of his excellent memory and age, residents gathered at the town hall to ask him questions about their family and friends who had passed away. He told stories for over an hour that day.
Proud of my history and thankful for my family.
It's easy to relate to the feeling of checking into a new accommodation, the beds freshly made, all of the clothing in your suitcase wrinkled from the journey.

 • 1. When was this photo taken?

Approximately Fall of 1999.

2. Where was this photo taken?

My apartment on main street, Shepherdstown, WV.

3. Who took this photo?

A wonderful Shepherdstown girl, Amy Harbin.

4. What are we looking at here?

I love vintage clothing and I was working on a project of vintage wedding dresses. I had just moved into this beautiful and historical (during the Civil War my apartment was a hospital) apartment with huge windows and no furniture except this lone chair and a few plants. It was the perfect light for this photo of Amy in this wonderful vintage wedding dress with so many beautiful buttons. The photo was taken with my 1972 Bronica Medium Format Camera with 120 black and white Kodak film.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

How does this old photo make me feel: lost time . . . everywhere. . an old wedding dress. . . revived to be part of my photography life. . .in a new apartment. . that I no longer live at anymore. . . . lost rolls of film. . . one of many . . . .that symbolize much of what has been started but time. . ..has left uncompleted. The photo makes me sad. . .but inspired to keep at it.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had no idea what would be on this roll of 120 film. The one of many rolls still left . . . undeveloped.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

This brings back memories of starting a new life, living for the first time in a town and not in the country, the freedom of working on my photography with little other distractions, making new friends, a light sense of being. Feeling which have not as much to do with the photo itself, but the moments surrounding the making of it.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I think people will find it having a sense of peace and beauty and also a sense of . . . . time has past.
