The lighting makes him look a bit menacing and dramatic so I don't expect people to respond to it in same way as I do.
4. What are we looking at here?

One of the managers at the Somerville Theater is adjusting the movie titles on the marqui in Davis Square on a rainy day.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

This photo makes me deeply nostalgic for working here during the summer in college. It wasn't great pay, but we ate tons of free ice cream and popcorn and my coworkers were generally a delight.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had no idea what was on this disposable camera. It had come with me over several moves and I had no idea when it had been shot.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

This photo brings back memories of seeing the same movie credits over and over while cleaning theaters, of only eating popcorn and ice cream for a whole week (would not recommend,) of sneaking into the balcony to watch live performances, of drawing our own contributions to the Museum of Bad art, of cleaning up throw-up in the theater bathroom, of furiously biking to work to make it on time, of watching Keytar Bear play in Davis Square, of watching bad movies just to stay in the AC.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I hope people can figure out what's going on.

4. What are we looking at here?

My Grandmother Mary Mian knitting a cover for a pillow

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Sad and happy. She passed in 2001 at the age of 98. I miss her. I was named after her husband Aristide Mian who was a Parisian sculptor. She was a writer for the New Yorker magazine and they were an art couple living in France and then after WWII in Nyack, NY, and then moving to Santa Fe, NM. I feel I got my art background from him and she was very supportive in my career. I was the only one of my siblings and cousins who followed in the arts. I'm happy that this roll has been founded and developed!

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had no idea what was on this film. I was a little scarred that it was an important assignment that I was hired to photograph and lost an important roll for a client or project. Thankfully this was an important roll found that had deep personal images. Most of this roll is of my family and our pets. My grandmother has since passed as our cats also so this was a nice surprise to see this roll.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

A lot of memories with her being my biggest fan of my work. She stayed with my family in her later years and I would see and talk to her daily. I remember her frequently writing and knitting and taking walks around my neighborhood.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Remind them of their loved-ones if it be a family member or a pet. We sometimes take for granted that they will always will be there.
5. How does this old photo make you feel?

A nice time down memory lane. How a little animal can bring love to a family and create a bond. I grew up with this cat and its siblings and saw them born and sadly die. How a little cat just wants and gives unconditional love.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I remember watching the kittens being born and as a kid this was the first time I had seen anything been born so it was an eye opening experience. I had graduated from college and moved back in with my parents to freelance in the Washington DC area. My career had just started so I remember the confidence I was getting starting to freelance for the Washington Post and others. It was the first time I was making a significant amount of money and living at home. Within a year I had left Washington to purse a staff newspaper position out of state. This time frame was the last time I was living at home with parents other than just visiting so it has special meaning especially since my mother is turning 81 this year and her health is not as good.

Palo Duro Canyon, TX

3. Who took this photo?

Jennifer Mitchell

4. What are we looking at here?

This is the Lighthouse, the famous rock formation at Palo Duro Canyon in West Texas.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

This photo makes me feel both sad and hopeful. I took this picture during an Easter weekend of soul searching . . . was I actually going to move from West Texas to New York City? (By August of that same year, I was living in Brooklyn. I had no job and knew 2 people). Thirteen years later, I am still in Brooklyn! I miss that girl who would just up and decide to move! It was wonderful, though, to be reminded of her and that part of my spirit.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I honestly had no idea what to expect!

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

This picture reminds me of the stark beauty of West Texas: the big ole skies with lots of stars. Landscapes of browns and reds and greens and blues, punctuated with bright wildflowers. Also, the love and laughter I experienced while living there. I count my friends from West Texas as life long ones.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I suspect that it might evoke a nostalgia for the West, both the scenery and the spirit. I know it does for me!
After a day of frolicking on the beach, this is my sister who is reading to her two children and our niece.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

As all the kiddos in the picture are my nieces and nephew, it makes me feel amazingly proud. One is in the Air Force Academy, one is a wedding planner in a Colorado Rocky Mountain resort, and one just got accepted into a Phd program for Astrophysics. I bet my sister (who is reading to them) thinks that she might have had a little something to do with it. :) When I showed her the picture, she sighed and said, "Oh, that was always one of my favorite things to do with those kids!"

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I honestly had no idea what to expect!

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Whenever possible, our family goes to Destin, Florida. We have for years. And even though this is not a beach picture, it sure reminds me of all those trips we have taken over the years.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Who doesn't love to be snuggled up and read to? I hope it brings that feeling of security and safety and wrapped around the people that you love.

2. Where was this photo taken?

Bethany, West Virginia

3. Who took this photo?

I did.

4. What are we looking at here?

This image is of Randall Gorby at his home in West Virginia. I stopped off to see him on my way from Missouri, where I'd just graduated from journalism school, to El Salvador to start a career as a freelance reporter. The Gorby home had been a refuge for me since I was introduced to Randall and his family on my first journey into Appalachia ten years before. Randall was a charismatic, larger-than-life character. War veteran, steelworker, union organizer, commune host, father, husband, friend to the downtrodden and to any stranger who appeared at his door.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Getting to know Randall, his wife Irmgard, and their children was a transformative experience for me. I feel sadness and a sense of loss. Randall is gone. So too is that magical time, that magical place. But It also makes me feel grateful that I found my way there through a series of decisions and coincidences.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

Not at all, I was completely surprised to find these images from West Virginia, especially this one of my old friend and mentor Randall Gorby.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I feel a sense of wonder and amazement remembering my early experiences traveling on my own for the first time into an unfamiliar place. And how I was welcomed like an old and trusted friend into the homes of folks who did not know me.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I hope others will experience a hint of the depth of Randall Gorby's humanity in this image. The kitten behind him lends a slightly ironic twist to the photo. Randall is clearly oblivious to its presence. But it seems to underscore his generosity of spirit that, like the cat, he is not consciously aware of.
My son and daughter (Jon-Christian & Caitlin) proudly display two new Furbies. It was a merry 'Furby' Christmas that year!

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

I'm tickled by how retro it looks, this snapshot of a Christmas past -- (taken just before the Singularity!)

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had no idea what was on the roll when I sent it in. This image is a complete surprise!

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Fun to recall the difficulty I had trying to find the Furbies pictured here -- it was one of the must-have toys every kid wanted for Christmas that year.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I suspect the Furbies will illicit an uncanny twinge of nostalgia in those of a certain age

4. What are we looking at here?

This image is of our much-beloved cat "Gus-Gus" (1998-2017). Like his composer namesake, Gustav Mahler, he was truly one of the greats! "Gus is people," we'd always say, and his outsized personality really shines in this photo. What a treasure to see him again appearing in these lost rolls! "May your symphony continue to play on, Gus-Gus!"

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

We lost Gus in 2017 and this photo brings a welcome tear of remembrance to our eyes! #lostrolls #feelinggrateful #sweetnostalgia

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had no idea what was on the roll when I mailed it in. It had been kicking around in an old shoebox filled with miscellaneous clutter for many years. I only remembered it when I heard about the Lost Rolls America project during a lecture at Penn State.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

It brings back a flood of early memories of Gus from when we first rescued him in the summer of 1999. He quickly won our hearts, such an amazing cat! This image is helping us heal after losing him in 2017.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I know one of the last things the world needs right now is another 'cat photo' -- but Gus was not just a cat to us: he was a friend, a companion, a true member of the family. I hope people smile when they see this quirky picture of him.

2. Where was this photo taken?

Philadelphia Marathon

3. Who took this photo?

Terry Yoder

4. What are we looking at here?

While I was running the Philadelphia Marathon, my husband took this picture of our two sons (on the right) alongside their two cousins (on the left). They were waiting to see me at the 20-mile mark in Manayunk.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Well, nostalgic, of course. But on a deeper level, it makes me think about memories from a kid's point of view because the image captures how ordinary - okay, boring - the event was for them. You'd never know these kids were at an event with cheering spectators lined up along this part of the marathon route if it weren't for the runner reflected in the store front window. To me, that is the essence of childhood. The stuff that matters to an adult just isn't a big deal for a kid.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

No. This surprised me completely. Of course, I wasn't there at that particular moment when the photo was taken. But even so, I doubt my husband even noticed the reflection in the window.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

It brings back all those tender memories of our sons at those busy, but really precious growing years. It also reminds me how much older and out of shape I'm in! Bleh!! ;)

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I'm not sure. When I try to look at the photo as if I don't know the kids in it, I still definitely see their personalities - from the extraverted older two, to our more introverted younger son, to our easy-going younger niece who could make a game out of a candy wrapper. More so, I just feel their boredom, that kid-like impatience. It's as if each by their facial expression and/or body language are saying, "This is a total drag. Can we go now?"

3.Who took this photo?

Chandler Griffin

4.What are we looking at here?

A portrait of Anwar Jaramogi I made while studying Photography and Film at Savannah College of Art & Design. Anwar and I were in the film program and I asked if I could take his portrait. In school I focused on 4x5 or 8x10 landscapes, not portraits. This was the only time I used the 11x14. For whatever reason, the film was never processed.

5.How does this old photo make you feel?

I'm not sure why I kept this huge box of undeveloped film for two decades. Maybe objects follow us around hoping to be rescued. After 20+ years in the elements the image has fogged. A halo effect follows the curve of his head… energy radiating up and out. In profile with his eyes closed, he seems in thoughtful prayer. Anwar was someone I knew but was not close with. He was that person you wanted to know, which is probably why I photographed him. I’m drawn to his closed eye. I imagine the sound of him slowly breathing in through his nose.

6.Is this what you expected to see?

I vaguely remember using the 11x14 camera and I remembered his face, but not his name. I have no memory why I photographed him with eyes closed in profile.

7.What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I remember walking through Bergen Hall, the photo building at SCAD. Get off the elevator on the 3rd floor, walk straight head, take a left and quick right into the 11x14 studio. A heavy black curtain opened to massive window light facing east. Long nights in private darkrooms mixing GAF 135 developer and printing images on Forte Warm Tone paper. Pulling liquid platinum with a brayer across a piece of paper in the Alt Process lab.

8.How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Hopefully others feel peace. The image reminds me to stop, feel and breathe from the heart up and out through the head.

I am playing with her one-year-old cat, named Monster. I am also wearing a pair of Doc Martins that look like hiking boots...woah...

5. How does this old photo make you feel?
Like I was young once!

This girlfriend of mine eventually became my wife, and our children got to meet this cat. When they saw the photo, they squealed
"Aaawwwww!"

6. Is this what you expected to see?

No. I expected a photo from a camping trip, or some family gathering.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Apartment living in my early 20s. Roommates, cheap carpet, furniture that doesn't match, linoleum floors...

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

They won't care. It's just a guy, playing with a cat, and no one looks particularly great.

Film photos were uglier. You didn't know what you got, so you didn't take it again if it didn't work out.

4. What are we looking at here?

People queue for gas in the shortages following the 1999 Kosovo War.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Certainly another era is upon us. I was glad to have captured what was going on and not often seen elsewhere.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I spent much of the 1990s photographing ceremonies in Africa. I thought the 50 rolls of undeveloped film I have are of those ceremonies. I was happily surprised to find 20-year old images of Serbia.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Slobodan Milosevic threw Serbia into chaos by driving to war in Kosovo. The already weak economy of this pariah country (not a member of the UN or other international bodies) experienced isolation and hyper-inflation. People struggled for basic daily needs. This was the last weekend of a 2-month lull after the war and the renewed start to opposition to Milosevic.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

People will be curious about content and context. Why only young men only seem to be queuing? Can we learn anything about them from their gestures and interactions?

4. What are we looking at here?

Nevena Antonijevic holds her 8th grade graduation photo on a visit to her Dad in the last summer doldrum of 1999. The Kosovo War has just ended and the opposition to the government of Slobodan Milosevic is about to restart in a pariah country isolated and estranged from much of the world.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

I feel a sense of accomplishment that I was able to capture the times and emotions as the country swayed from crisis to crisis. This was the last interlude - "coming up for air" I called it - between the major tumult of the Kosovo War 2 months earlier and the start of renewed opposition that month. We soon headed back to the capital and events were intense for the next 14 months. Nevena and I married 2 months later in Belgrade in the midst of mounting protest and turmoil.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I have 50 rolls of exposed film that I best recall as images of African Ceremonies I shot across the continent in the 1990s. I had no clue, and am happily surprised to learn, that some of the rolls are from the end of the Milosevic era - which I documented from Belgrade in tens of thousands of photos from 1997 through 2001.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

"Coming up for air" - the peaceful moments between tumult; Nevena's family gathering in the yard. Trying to get around to visit them in a country without much gas.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

People may feel as if they know something about her from this pensive moment. I welcome reactions as a photograph, like a person, is multi-dimensional.

I did.

4. What are we looking at here?

This is an exboyfriend and a cow. haha. We had gone up to Rockhill Creamery (Farm) for the weekend to visit a friend who was working there. We had a lovely time exploring the farm, meeting all the cows, and having a delicious meal in the barn.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

This feels like a lifetime ago! Looking through these forgotten photos flooded me with a rush of emotions, they brought back so many memories and adventures.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had no idea what was going to be on this old roll of film that was still in my Holga camera. I didn't know how many years old the photos would be, but I assumed there would probably

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

This photo brings back some really great memories with this exboyfriend. While we are both in better places now, we had many years of fun and adventure together, which I look back on fondly.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Because of the Holga photo, the black and white film, the lighting, and probably the fact that the film is quite old, the whole photo looks quite blurry. While others may just see a blurry cow and man, I see a long-ago adventure with a long-lost love.

Very nostalgic. I miss the days when my children were young and together we discovered new places, new cultures.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had no idea what was on this roll but expected that it would be from around this time because we soon were using digital cameras

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Memories of bonding with my family, feelings of possibilities

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I think they will like the red fan and wonder what the child's expression is behind it.

Somewhere in the Basque Country in Spain

3. Who took this photo?

I did.

4. What are we looking at here?

The girls pictured are the nieces of my then boyfriend (who would later become a celebrated filmmaker; Spain's Goya-decorated, national treasure). These little girls used to call me 'tía' all those years ago. I loved them. Our summer days were filled with pretend play and song and dance and I thought that they would always be in my life. And then for reasons I barely understand even today, I ran.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Wistful. Hailing from a small, complicated family back in my native lower Manhattan, my then boyfriend's carefree, loving family in Spain was to me the stuff of mythology. Quickly I became enmeshed in the fabric of this family; their otherworldliness was the antidote to my own life back in New York.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

No. The old roll of Tr-X that had taken up residence in my drawer for nearly 30 years always dared me to imagine. I never planned to develop it. I assumed if there was anything on the roll, it would either be something innocuous, like pictures of my grandmother or something embarrassing, like theatrical, nude self portraits. I might have taken pictures like that back then.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

The photos bring back a memory of time and a place, but more than that, they remind me of way I looked at the world as a young woman on the cusp of adulthood. These photos provoke a strong sense of longing in me; for youth and the illusion of its endless possibilities.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Behind these pictures of lost 'relatives' & girlish rapture is a young woman behind the camera, consumed by passion & uncertainty. But without the background, without the context, I am not really sure what people will see or how they will respond
5. How does this old photo make you feel?

My brother passed away last week and our mother in 2009. I'm feeling wistful. And grateful the project was able to convert a very unusual format of film.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

This roll was found in an old camera among our mother's things so I couldn't be sure what it contained. There are four frames and three are of her favorite pet. Even so this one is more interesting.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Arg of all the memories in that kitchen., including all the dishes I washed in that sink and the one before it, of her powerful factory foreman arms, and that I used that very same spatula this morning.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

It probably won't be interesting to others, especially as mom's eyes are closed.

2. Where was this photo taken?

Chinatown, San Francisco, CA
3. Who took this photo?

I did - Nicole Barens

4. What are we looking at here?

This is a view of rooftops in Chinatown with the San Francisco Bay in the distance. You'll notice two Taiwanese flags and a building dated 1920 with a Chinese style pagoda roof and painted balcony typical of the time.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It makes me a little nostalgic for City College's old satellite campuses. They were very run down but full of character. We now have a big, modern multistory building, which definitely facilitates teaching and the learning process, but sometimes I miss the cozy chaos of the old buildings.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

No -- I'd completely forgotten I'd taken these photos.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

It makes me remember teaching ESL to packed classes of primarily Chinese students. There was often a sense of barely managed chaos in these classes for reasons I've never quite understood, I could never get a good 50% of the large classes to follow directions. Despite, or maybe because of this, it brings a smile to my face because we usually ended up having fun and I managed to teach something despite the seeming disorder. No matter how many times I taught there and because I am not Chinese, I still always felt a small charge of excitement when entering Chinatown as an instructor -- that small sense of wonder that accompanies traveling to a new culture.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I think perhaps it will inspire some curiosity, where is this? It might also provide that sense of an insider's view that one cannot get from the street in a dense city. It is only when you enter one of the buildings and look out a back window that you are able to see the intimacies of daily life such as rooftop laundry juxtaposed with a more familiar skyline.

Of working in the Times Square area.

4. What are we looking at here?

Double exposure on medium format film, probably made on my Holga.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

I don't remember these moments but I do remember the experience of deciding to just make images that may or may not turn out. My boyfriend at the time gave me a handful of expired film so I felt really free to mess around and let go of control over how the images turned out. I love how the double exposure works together and the mood the image evokes.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

Not at all. I don't remember these particular images and I didn't take notes to see what my double exposures were. Or at least, if I did, I have no idea where I put them. I did have a sense that it was an intimate roll of film that I had made. I'm super excited to see the work years later. So much mystery and the magic of waiting for development is lost with digital photography.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I'm reminded of that time in my life where I was on my last 2 months of living in Asheville and I'd been there for 8 years. I was about to move back home to Portland, OR to develop my work after college so that I could have a new body of work to apply for an MFA. I didn't know what was next for me or my art practice. This was a moment where I was experimenting with my body and the landscape in such an intuitive way. Reminds me of how I want to work that way now instead of getting too stuck in conceptual ideas around the work. Just go and make and see what happens. Play more.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

The image opens up a lot of questions of what exactly we're looking at and I hope that it evokes a bit of mystery and a sense of mood that the viewer will impose on it.

Sad. Soft. Like I've lost my way. It makes me think about my dad and how complicated that relationship is and how precarious everything is.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

Unsure, I remembered what was happening that day but I'm sad all of the photos seem soft and a out of focus. My father is getting older and I would like a decent of photo of him.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I scribbled a note on the roll of film so that I would remember taking the photos. Thafer was using the porch railing to lean into my father's back. I remember Thafer being all over him, he loves his dad in a way that's heartbreaking.
