• 1. When was this photo taken?

2002 ?

2. Where was this photo taken?

Hampstead, London UK

3. Who took this photo?

me, I think

4. What are we looking at here?

My friend Tracy Garden, or as I would write here name Traxzyi

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It makes me laugh, seeing Tracy's head float in old back garden, nostalgic and bizarrely home sick.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

did not know what I was going to see

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

It makes me think of how much I used to laugh my head of with her. It makes me miss london and old friends especially people who have a wicket sense of humor - and seeing her head float in back garden is a perfect reminder of her beautiful funny madness.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

don't know, hopefully they will want to send Tracy Chocolates... She probably prefer a load a cash, though.

 • 1. When was this photo taken?

2003(ish)

2. Where was this photo taken?

my back yard

3. Who took this photo?

me

4. What are we looking at here?

I suspect this was taken during the honeymoon phase with a new toy. I remember hastily shooting off a few rolls to test the mettle of a medium format camera that would do the thinking for me.

This is a once glamorous leather sofa, found on the street and relocated to a spot under a pepper tree. It still lives there, a bit worse for wear, and still capitulates at least once a year to the post-rain exuberance of plumbago.

It felt irresponsible - almost reckless - to point and shoot 120 film after so many years of meticulous metering and careful composition. Probably managed to justify it under the pretense that I needed a use for the already expired film I'd been hoarding.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Glad I explored the pitfalls of autopilot before taking my new toy on a job...

Also, chagrined that - even then - I don't prune as often as I really should.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

Couldn't have guessed what would be on this roll, but I am shocked to note how long that sofa has survived under a tree.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I was excited by the new camera. Bought it used on Craigslist, completely on impulse. Aside from getting a few more exposures out of 120 film it never really did much for me.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Not sure it immediately reads as a sofa covered with dead leaves and overgrowth... but for the record, it was a lot more comfortable than it looks.

 • 1. When was this photo taken?

Summer of 2004

2. Where was this photo taken?

Carlton Arms Hotel in NYC

3. Who took this photo?

Vytenis Jankunas (me)

4. What are we looking at here?

My friend Rodney is smoking a cigarette on the opening night at the Carlton Arms hotel's new rooms opening night.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It makes me fell warm and fuzzy. Rodney is my first friend in NYC. We're still good friends to this day.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I didn't know at all what to expect, so every picture was a little surprise to me.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

A memory of more active night life 10 years ago, more drinks, more cigarettes and more fun I guess.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I don't know. Carlton Arms is a weird hotel. In the background you see a wall painting with people having sex for example and this is already different and moody.
2012-13

2. Where was this photo taken?

Denver, CO

3. Who took this photo?

Kate Donaldson

4. What are we looking at here?

Batman. A little worse for the wear... also on my last roll of 120.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Nostalgic.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

Does anyone ever expect Batman? I don't remember taking this exact picture but I do remember thinking that it needed to be memorialized at some point.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

My husband and I were car free for the first 4 years of our married life in Denver - our love language included picking up sidewalk trinkets as we walked. Batman was a gift. A fitting one since my husband is a Superman fan.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Depends on whether they're Batman or Superman fans...

 • 1. When was this photo taken?

early 2000s

2. Where was this photo taken?

In front of my home

3. Who took this photo?

Probably me

4. What are we looking at here?

A child I don't recognize collecting bugs during a typical gathering at my house.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

I keep coming back to this photo because everything about it is just out of reach: the container, the juice cup that matches the color of his/her sleeve, the focus, the identity of the child or the man patiently participating...everything in this moment is a bit blurred and faded, including why I took this picture.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had no expectations, the roll of 120 film was not labeled, so I only knew I was the person who must have exposed the film but had no clue as to what we'd find, if anything.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I remember the era when our group of friends all had young children and we would often gather so the kids could play and we adults could also have fun and hang out, drink, smoke, laugh together. Families have since moved out of state, gotten divorced, kids gone off to college...
This weekend will be Easter and there will be no egg hunt or gathering at my house, everyone has grown apart, gone away. I miss that time, though it was probably post 9-11, so it was not a time of innocence for the adults. We must have tried to preserve that though, for our kids.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

People will probably wish this image was more interesting, certainly wish it was in focus.
Maybe thats why it IS interesting, feels more like a memory than a document.

 • 1. When was this photo taken?

Approx. August, 2001

2. Where was this photo taken?

Missoula Montana

3. Who took this photo?

Melanie Chapman (me)

4. What are we looking at here?

My son Ethan and my former Step-Sister's son Bo cooling off from the late summer heat in Missoula, Montana.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Melancholy for a time when these now young men were still boys, when we were more connected as family, when it seemed summers in Montana would be a regular routine for my son, as it was when I was a kid.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had no idea what was on these rolls, or even when they were made, so I had no expectations, just curiosity.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I remember being a child myself, spending my summers in Missoula with my dad and large extended family. We had a big log cabin in a canyon and a teepee and lots of extra hippies living with us at various times.

This image reminds me of the Missoula County Fair, of being a child, of feeling free. That all went away when my dad and step mother got divorced.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

People will see two kids eating sno-cones, they will not be able to see the that the space between them will widen in the next two decades so that they no longer know each other.

 • 1. When was this photo taken?

1982

2. Where was this photo taken?

Spirit Lake, Mt. St. Helens

3. Who took this photo?

Julie Fowells

4. What are we looking at here?

Two years after the eruption of Mt. St. Helens the landscape seemed frozen in time; it was eery how little had changed since the ash settled. This must be what remained of Spirit Lake. You can almost see the windows of the train I shot this through..

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Thrilled to find a surprisingly well preserved record from that time in my life, heartbroken that I don't remember it better, and devastated my papa isn't alive to see these pictures.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

Every once in a while I've wondered what happened to this, my first ever roll of 35mm. Definitely wouldn't have predicted I'd find it 35 years later, still in the canister, tumbling around in a (lead x-ray proof!) bag of unexposed Kodachrome.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Papa bought this camera for me: a Pentax Super Program, which was not only my first 35mm, but sounded very, well... super. I was heading out to spend a year in the Philippines a few weeks later, and felt decidedly grown up.

Later that week we took a steam train up to the recently transformed Mt. St. Helens, mostly just because my pa really loved old trains. Pretty sure I feigned boredom - the significance of the altered landscape was lost on me - but was privately bursting with pride to be nonchalantly wielding a tool so befitting my worldly sophistication. I remember thinking - hoping - Papa was equally proud of me.

In retrospect, he probably was.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Without any context it just looks like a vaguely eery lake. Hard to imaging this landscape existed in the Pacific Northwest. To me it screams kid-trying-very-hard-to-take-grown-up-pictures, but that's probably just me.
Two years after the eruption of Mt. St. Helens the landscape seemed frozen in time; it was eery how little had changed since the ash settled. I think the mud is runoff from Spirit Lake - although it might actually be all that remained.
8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Guess I leaned towards the dark side of things early on. The view was no doubt achingly beautiful in the other direction.
it took a little time to figure out when this was, but once i realized that this was a friend's 30th birthday party, everything fell into place. i was living in chicago at the time and visited dallas whenever i could to spend time with friends and family.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

i was grinning happily when i saw this image. the very first of the roll, i think. it perfectly captures the mood of the day, just a bunch of silliness and fun with old and new friends.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

i had a feeling that there would be photos from a road trip project i was working on, but the party photos were a lovely surprise.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?
3. Who took this photo?

Anjelica Jardiel

4. What are we looking at here?

This is a portrait of an old friend named Justin, taken on a spring day walking around our neighborhood, making pictures together.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

The photo came as a surprise, considering we had a bit of a falling out and hadn't spoken in a few years. I'm quite pleased with the image, and I've been inspired to pick my Hasselblad back up and shoot film again.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had no expectations of what could have been on the roll, but there is a certain mystic quality and profundity about it, like the universe played a part to bring us back together.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

The photo brings back memories of our friendship, the conversations we would have about art, and has actually reconciled us to a certain degree.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Justin loved the portrait, and I do as well. He looks noble. I never know how people will respond to my images, but the most important thing to me is whether or not I like it.

2. Where was this photo taken?

Albuquerque, NM

3. Who took this photo?

Vennie Eline White

4. What are we looking at here?

As a photography student at the University of New Mexico, I took my camera everywhere. I don't remember exactly where we were, and though the face is familiar, I don't remember who this is.
This is a double exposure. I wonder if the film jammed or if I put it through my camera twice. The boy looking on the scene almost seems to be a ghost, surreal.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Young again, and hopeful. Though 10 years would pass before I made my dream come true--to become a photojournalist, the seed was planted here.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I didn't know what I would find, but I'm happy to see the beginnings of my long passion with photography.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

What I most appreciate about these old images is seeing the visible thread woven throughout my life. The young woman I was 50 years ago is in many ways not much different that the older woman I've become. My camera is central to every part of my life, whether as a social worker, journalist, teacher, no matter where I've lived--11 states, small towns, large cities. Documenting sweet moments like this still brings me--and others--much pleasure.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

In a time when many of us are overwhelmed by news of the day, I hope this reminds us of the tender moments still available to us.
4. What are we looking at here?

I was a photography student at the University of New Mexico and working at O'Henry's Barbecue, where many students, professors, working people gathered for lunch. A customer asked if I would take pictures of him with his son. Lucky for us, dandelions were waiting to provide the day's entertainment. Though I don't remember their names, I remember this day fondly. I'm sure I developed at least one roll from this time because I remember making prints and giving them to the dad.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Joyful. Even then I knew that making photos provides several moments of pleasure--the anticipation of what I'll find, the observing of the scene, the taking of the picture, the developing of the film, seeing the picture emerge from the chemicals, and finally, sharing the photos. I still try to give prints to everyone I've photographed. Since people most often see photos on their computers or phones, they seem to treasure prints even more.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had no idea what might appear. Now I'm curious about the other 10 or so rolls I have in a shoebox.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I remember those heady early days of photography when anything seemed possible, even for a young woman in a field dominated by men. I came home intoxicated from a day of picture-taking in downtown Albuquerque. Someone said, "Vennie finally got high," but I was high on photography! not on marijuana. Now, 50 years later, at the age of 72, I am still seldom without a camera.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Perhaps with nostalgia for their own childhood days.
7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

This was shot when I was studying photography at Santa Monica College. Often, a group of us went out shooting together - and this night was especially fun together. I captured a few of my friends setting up tripods and preparing to shoot.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Who doesn't love a night shot? Aside from that, I hope beyond the street and lights, the photographers in the scene will also be noted!
4. What are we looking at here?

This is the bottom of the stairway and its shadow in the basement of the Art Institute in Chicago.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

This photo makes me feel nostalgic for Chicago. I lived there from 1974-1978 while I was a graduate student at the University of Chicago. I often went to the Art Institute, spending hours looking at the art.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

This roll of film was marked "Chicago" so I was not totally surprised. I had a memory of photographing in Millennium Park outside the Art Institute. But I had no recollection of taking this small architectural detail of light and shadow.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

This photo brings back memories of wandering the world with a 35mm film camera around my neck looking for the transitory moments of light that are seen for a moment and then disappear.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I hope people will reflect on the fleeting nature of life and realize that the essence of photography is light.

An American flag blowing in the wind. It has been attached to a lamp post in anticipation of the upcoming 4th of July celebrations.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

This photo makes me feel nostalgic about the four years I lived in Chicago in the mid-70s and for a time not so long ago when the American flag was a symbol of hope and unity.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had no idea what was on this roll of film.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I remember the trip my wife Diane and I took to Chicago in the summer of 2009. She was presenting a paper at Loyola University Chicago. On this day we were in rural Illinois visiting friends from our graduate student days at the University of Chicago.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Viewers may think that the flag, like America itself, is blowing in the wrong direction.

4. What are we looking at here?

This is a portrait of a French painter Emmanuel Flipo, who was living at the time in NYC. Now he resides in Paris, France.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Im really surprised I managed to get such a soulful portrait of my friend.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

Not really. the roll was marked "gypsy party" and I thought it was sometime long ago in France. To my surprise when I saw the images I realized it was taken in NY when French gypsy band called "La Rue Ketanou" was visiting. They were friends of Emmanuel.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

This was amazing time in New York, when I followed the band and Emmanuel from throughout New York City. Whenever we went there was instant party.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?
I hope they will be curious who is this person?

4. What are we looking at here?

This is a photograph of a Polish painter living in New York, Jerzy Kubina. Very good friend of mine. This shot was taken in his studio when he was painting a portrait of a friend

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It makes me feel great and very emotional. Looking today at this photo I think I captured something very special and timeless in his character.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I wasn't sure what I was going to see. I had the name printed on the roll, but I didn't know what year it was or what in what circumstances the photos were taken

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

It really is very touching to me to experience that moment again. Jerzy was just visiting few days ago. Memories of very long friendship and inspiration.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I hope the viewers will see the essence of the artist in this photograph

4. What are we looking at here?

Nature in its pure form; the morning after snowfall when the world is calm and tranquil.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

This photo makes me feel calm and refreshed but also extremely grateful that moments and places like this still can be found. I want to close my eyes and breathe in the fresh air from that day and feel the sunlight on my face.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I was pleasantly surprised by this photo, as most of the roll was captured either inside or at night - so I was not expecting it. I saw something special in this snow-dusted landscape that day, and all those same feelings are there now.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Not one specific memory, but of the many exploring adventures I have taken off the beaten path throughout life. There is something to be said about being in a place that seems perfect even if just for a fleeting moment.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Visually, an appreciation for the depth and layers of the natural landscape. I also hope it makes them feel good; finding themselves exploring the landscape and the air around them.
4. What are we looking at here?

My husband, who most likely gave in to my request to do the snow angel - because who doesn't enjoy a good snow angel no matter their age. I remember we were on a solo hike that morning around the open grounds near the cabin we rented with friends for New Years. We were both so excited by the amount of snow, which we were not expecting but had kept are fingers crossed the night before to have.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

This photo made me smile right away, chuckle and feel happy. I love this man; he's my goofy best friend and lover - seeing that face will always make me feel good.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I didn't even remember taking this particular photo that day, so I am not sure what I expected to see but am definitely happy to have it to add to our visual memories.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

This photo took me back to one of the first dates or activities my husband and I did before we were officially a couple. It was some 8 years ago and I had planned a play day in the snow - I am sure I talked him into snow angels then too. But I remembered mostly the fun we had then and all the laughing that took place that day that has continued throughout our relationship.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

People may not directly relate to my husband but seeing the snow angle I feel will make others smile and remind them of a similar time. We all have a inner kid in us that enjoys those simple acts of pure play, right?
5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Not remembering at first the circumstance (or identity) of the subject was initially jarring but then I remembered this is my youngest brother messing around with my siblings and cousins after the funeral of our grandfather. It was a celebration of life.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

When I first started looking at the images I did not remember or recognize them, 15 or so years later. How could I forget what I have seen twice, both in experience and through a lens? But when I looked at the images on my laptop and not on a small phone format I could see and eventually my memory returned, in the context of reading the film scanned in strips, or as contact sheets.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Nostalgia for the home of my grandparent's, which has since disappeared with all the the contents I thought were so permanent. A fun evening with my siblings and cousins.
5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It gives me a SoCal beach surf vibe. The colors of the velvia film give and the soft focus and the palm trees (I love palm trees by the way).

I was collecting old cameras at the time and this was shot with one of them, I am sure the soft focus was a mistake but I actually really like this photo. Sometimes a mistake becomes a gem.
nope. I was so excited to see what was going to be on this roll of film.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Shooting with Velvia film. I loved that film, the colors were so good. Also just shooting film in general. I shot mostly film at this time and miss shooting film. I really enjoyed the Dark room and this photo reminds me of all the late nights processing and printing.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?
I hope it sparks some kind of nice memory. Maybe a trip to California, or a beach day....but some might just see it as an out of focus image.....and I am ok with that. :)

This is one of my good friends Shea standing on the beach with his surfboard. He just got done surfing a heat in a surf contest. I think this contest was at La Jolla Shores Beach, San Diego, California

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It make me feel good. This was a fun time in my life. Shea and I competed in surf contests and would travel up and down the California coast. Also I was also going to Brooks Institute of Photography at the same time. I was collecting old cameras and would randomly use them. I can't remember what camera I used to shoot this photo though.
I was in lower Manhattan, near Foley Square, covering a Ku Klux Klan gathering where there were a lot of police officers and counter demonstrators and I must have seen this as I was leaving the area.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

I laughed when I saw this, which is probably why I took the picture, and I love the idea that a picture can get better with age. Of course you would never see this image again, in this form anyway, and it also reminds me of a much more gritty and visually interesting NYC.

6. Is this what you expected to see?
I had no expectations actually. It's really a mystery as to why some film gets developed and some gets thrown in a bag.
5. How does this old photo make you feel?
4. What are we looking at here?

Multiple people, maybe 4 different people in an in-camera multiple exposure. I believe this picture is from a friends birthday party, but I can't remember for sure...

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Like photography can, at times, talk directly to the inextricable tension between lived experience and the documentation of experience and the strain between the truth of memory and the truth value of photography.

With this being said, the composition becomes the strength of this image for me, not the memory. It becomes something of a formal study in color, shape, movement, and light. This is what is wonderful about photography in relation to memory for me: although photography can sometimes fail to remind (a job so often charged with), it can almost always stand firmly on a separate set of legs, a set of legs built on aesthetics, composition, technical acuity, and theory.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

Not at all! I don't even clearly remember the event in the photograph.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I certainly do not remember the person on the right-hand side of the frame, but I am pretty sure I recognize the person whose hair is on the left. This photo reminds me of youth, and older youth. mid-twenties. Old and young at once. Alive. Uncertain. Together. Authentically inauthentic, but deeply sincere. This photograph leaves me guessing – at perception, orientation, and memory.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?
I am not sure, but I hope they respond to the space, movement, and energy.
In coordination with the Other Voices, Other Rooms show at the Wexner Center in 2008, there was a "drag booth" set up outside the gallery. At this booth, the public was invited to put on wigs and other clothing provided and have a Polaroid made of them to commemorate the show. I made this, and a couple other photographs, of the participants.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It has been almost 10 years since I took this photograph. That time has, at once, equaled what feels like a lifetime and a single blink of the eye. I remember this person specifically. I remember that he was alone. I remember the time and care he took choosing the wig. The time he took standing, gently stroking the fake hair in silence as it fell on his face, like no one else existed. I remember the intensity, the beauty, and the sadness that radiated from this guy in that moment. I remember feeling deeply for him and his long blonde hair. This photograph is a direct channel to that feeling.

6. Is this what you expected to see?
I really had no idea what I was going to get back with this roll. It is one of many that live in a black bag in my refrigerator waiting...
See question 5 for the answer to this. There is much more that this photo does for me, but it lives in the periphery of what we see in the frame.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I'm not sure why but she seems happy to be there on her own making pictures. We went to Maine every summer so it is a reminder of that small slice of time that we could all connect and feel the environment around us.
8. How do you think others will respond to this photo? *
I guess I would hope that others can have a moment like this.

My wife.

4. What are we looking at here?

The 80th birthday party for my father in law. (the man seated to the left) Four of the people in this photo are no longer alive.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

In this photo you know exactly where you are and what is happening. But the feel of the photo is not as delightful as the setting suggests. The picture evokes sadness in me. The overcast sky produces a soft light and dark, almost gloomy shadows.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I did not know what to expect. This roll of film was in a box with some old throw away cameras I never got around to submitting for development and some Seattle Filmworks rolls and various forgotten bits that I suppose were never missed in the first place. I am struck by the idea that memories are memories of memories and not memories of things that happened. Photographs are so powerful in shaping our memories.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I was in the room when Lucien died, I was pallbearer at Annette’s funeral, and I attended Roy’s and Pete’s funerals. There is intellect and beauty and grace in everyone here, but this picture reminds me of the struggle that we go through. The inevitable heartbreak that we must endure. The pain.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

If you know the struggles that people go through, went through, then perhaps you'd feel the same as I do. But just seeing the picture may not make much of an impression.

New Jersey

3. Who took this photo?

I did.

4. What are we looking at here?

My Mother (standing left in this photo) and my Wife both made amazing efforts to create a safe childhood for their kids so their imaginations could develop unencumbered and their intellects were free to explore.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

These are ritualistic, obligatory moments endlessly captured on camera, but to see my Mom, who died in 2013, watching my Wife administer the sacrament of birthday cake, with her delighted smile, it feels sad and comfortable all at once. The laser focus and anticipation of the children is palpable.
How lucky I have been to have smart, strong and loving women in my life. And lots of cake.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

The expectation of the hidden treasures that might be uncovered was delicious. I had hoped that perhaps I would see some vintage automobiles out front of the state house but I'm not that old and I don't think I've ever been to a 'state house'. Both of the rolls I submitted to "Lost Rolls America" contained photos of birthday parties. My daughters in one roll, and my Father in law's 80th birthday party in another.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

This picture reminds me of an older photo of my own 4-year-old birthday party, taken at a similar angle, from the end of a table full of children, with my own Mother leaning over the table handing out cake. What I see here is my Wife’s love and dedication to making our children happy.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

It is hard to know how others will feel. This scene is endlessly repeated and photographed in American culture. Social media is full to the brim of phone pics and announcements of people's birthdays. I don't think anyone else would find much meaning in this photo. The meaning seems to be within me.

A portrait of a new friend (at that time). We don't know each other from long time but we found connections very quickly the first day we met, just one time before this picture was taken.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It is super mysterious to me, I can not completely understand her mood. Depending on where I look I see seriousness, badass attitude, a little smirk and vulnerability.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

No, but I was not sure what to expect either.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Even tho is just one year old, many things have happened and changed since the picture was taken. It feels like a much older picture just because the many events occurred since then. I guess it help me to value the path that I have traveled so far. Growing, learning and getting closer to my goals and dreams. I think this picture is not about the girl itself but what the memories that person, place and moment brings to myself.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Maybe they are going to think I am portraying an artist next to her work. In fact I am portraying an artist (a new friend) but not next to her work instead surrounded by the art the both of us are passionate about. Photography.

Thankful to be given this moment.
As a photographer...connecting with a stranger..having them give themselves
He's given me this perfect thing.
There is an inherent dignity in that.
I am completely absorbed in the moment.
Time and I no longer exist.
It's a selfless act.
7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

You can take a girl out of the West....
but not the West out of the girl.
I grew up out West.
The wide open spaces are a part of my soul.
My father would take us on these summer road trips.
He wanted us to see America...it's beauty and it's vastness.
It makes me think of the time we were driving from Kansas toward the Rocky Mountains. Every 30 miles or so I would ask,
"When will we see them rising on the horizon?"
He would say, "Soon."
And I would ask, "Will they be "Purple Mountains Majesties" like the song?"
And he answered, "Yes."
When they first appeared from the
window of our car they were purple.
I was amazed.
Still am.
It was a moment that was very
profound for me.
It married truth and art for me.
I didn't know I was a photographer yet.
But it was a pivotal moment.
This photograph brings me back there again.
A young Navajo girl gives me a sly grin as she rides her horse in the Monument Valley High School Homecoming Parade down main street.
5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Home.
Confidence.
Riding on the backside of a horse.
I feel him beneath me.
The smell of him fills my nose.
My fingers run over his coat.
His eyes the most soulful things I've looked into in years.
There is a wisdom found in a horse that traverses a millennium and time.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

No

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

My first ride.
I rode bareback and western.
I got my first horse at 6 years old.
His name was Toy.
And he was the meanest shetland pony there ever was.
The first time I rode him...he took off running.
He ran for the tree with long dangling branches and tried to knock me off his back.
He did not.
I had my own horses until I was 16.
Horses taught me to be tough and
always in control.
Or you will die.
I got bucked, thrown and dragged behind her once.
My foot caught in the stirup..my head inches away from her hooves as she galloped away dragging me behind her.
One time my horse was crossing the Colorado River and he decided the wanted to go for a swim with me on his back.
There is a oneness that happens between horse and rider.
It's deeply spiritual...mystical even.
They have been my greatest teachers.
I recognized the young Navajo girls' confidence and self-assuredness in her sly smile and one-handed grasp of the reins.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Horse women and cowgirls will
see what I see.
Women who grew up riding will be
reminded of the confidence,
toughness and deep love
that comes from that oneness that is between horse and rider.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

The drive from home to work that ended me. I couldn't do that drive every day, especially as the office required us to be in our chairs at 8 am. I remember my morning coffee, public radio, and the drive to the office. I regret not spending more time on that amazing porch.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Not sure. A home is a home is a home...stories belong to those who lived there.
Boats floating on Xochimilco's historic canals, where vegetables and flowers have been grown for centuries, supporting the Mexico CIty economy.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Seeing this photo brings me right back to Xochimilco and a trip that presented so many great surprises - wonderful food, people, and destinations seems cliche. I met my future wife on this trip, made new lifelong friends, and found myself wondering why I'd never considered Mexico as destination before.
4. What are we looking at here?

Rob - who lived with us for 10 years.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Sad. Rob died a month ago after struggling with addiction. It's an uncharacteristic shot in that he was often laughing and silly for photos. The kitchen and colors are so bright and lovely - it makes me think of happier times and how hopeful we felt. And yet, he looks so serious - it's almost prescient.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

No. I had no idea what to expect but was hoping the rolls would have photos of my husband who died in 2004 and took a gazillion photos.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Sweet and sad.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?
Rob sure was handsome. And the kitchen looks appealing - but his gaze is stern - he almost looks angry and that seems unlikely.
The view from our U-Haul as my husband and I drove from Boston, MA across the country to our new home in Boise, ID. His hand on the steering wheel is reflected in the trees.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?
It brings back our excitement, nervousness, and curiosity about what the West had in store for us.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I couldn't remember what was on the rolls, so it was a nice surprise to see photos from our six day cross-country trip.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Our friends in Boston helping us pack our U-Haul; our neighbors lined up in our driveway to send us off; our road trip playlist blasting from our iPod; nasty thunderstorms; interesting hotels; changing landscapes that gave us a new sense of pride in our country; feeling closer to my husband than ever.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

It might take viewers a second to see my husband's hand reflected in the trees, but once they do I hope it will give them a different take on the image - perhaps another layer to ponder beyond the natural scenery.

a flag draped tribute to the fallen firefighters on 9/11, with candles flickering below and a shadow/echo of the FDNY insignia above. The flash of the camera sends an evocative and fraught burst off the framed photo...shocking and harsh.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

took my breath away; shattered emotions and memories of that day in New York. Loss and sadness, American pride

6. Is this what you expected to see?

No. I barely remember taking the photo, but it must have caught my eye and heart.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Beyond the obvious tragedy of 9/11, I acutely remember the thousands of photos draped everywhere to help families and friends find their loved ones. People vanished. In this photo, the tragedy is remembered but not a photo of a person is evident.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

The flash is jarring, and the orange coloring is hot. The color is sort of an echo of the terror. The flag provokes multiple associations. Shattered emotions. Haunting.

This is a portrait of a student I taught in the summer of 1995 when was a instructor at the University of Massachusetts/ Amherst’s summer art program in La Napoule, in the South of France.
It was in an amazing stone Villa on the Mediterranean sea.
I do not know remember his name and don't remember taking any of these photos on the roll!

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It was a great surprise to see the images. We spent a lot of time exploring the area together, taking the train to various towns, photographing portraits of each other and the landscapes. I was not much older than the students and I remember feeling somewhat insecure, trying to relate to the students as a teacher but also hanging out with them, and experiencing the culture, food, art, being very free and open to process of discovery. This was over 23 years ago..love that I can feel the beauty of that place as I look at the photo.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

Not at all. I had completely forgotten about this setting and the experience of teaching a class to college students in this beautiful location on the French Riviera. The rolls were marked France but I had no memory of taking these photographs and the people in them, although happy to relive the memory of that summer.

A foster child celebrates Christmas with her foster mother in an apartment on Halsey Street in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

One of the many reasons I love photography is that time passes, and we have this frozen, unchanged moment, that if only for a fleeting, random glance, reminds us of how things beyond our memory might have looked.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

No. I had no idea what was on this film. It has been sitting in a box for over 25 years, unprocessed. I thought the roll would probably be blank. In the days of film, I used to switch out rolls, from tri-x to t-max, from outside to inside, as a way to control the ISO, so I dozens of rolls probably only have a few frames on them that I never returned to.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

It makes me sad-not because it is a sad picture, but for much more selfish reasons. I miss black and white film. I miss being young. What other images are out there, unprocessed, laying in a basement in some brown recluse filled box?

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Who knows? That is not for me to say.

Sherwood Mill Pond, Westport, CT

3. Who took this photo?

Brian McGloin

4. What are we looking at here?

Gates used to keep water from high tides of the Long Island Sound in Sherwood Mill Pond. As the water drained back out, it powered early grist mills. The gates were opened annually to drain the pond for repairs and sand removal. This area has some of my favorites places, and I spent as much time there as I could. One time, as I walked away from crawling around with a camera near the gates and wooden bridges, I saw a police car approach where I was. I wasn't sure if it was just an odd coincidence or someone who thought the guy with the camera was up to something.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It confirms my theory that being a broke news photographer in a phenomenally nice area is much better than being a broke news photographer elsewhere.
It reminds me of how much I loved living and growing up in SW Connecticut. And, as much as I like Portland, OR, my current home, I miss quirky little Connecticut.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

No. Actually, sort of. I participated in Lost Rolls with no expectations. I have bags full of film. The newer rolls are organized, the older ones (maybe 15 years old?) are not very well organized.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

How I scraped by financially; how I didn't really deal with some personal issues from childhood and their effect on my personal and professional life; how lonely and isolated I felt.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Hopefully they will appreciate the wonderful small things around them, the almost forgotten bits of history, the odd things. Maybe they'll slow down, stop staring at little screens and crawl under bridges to see what's there.
5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It makes me smile and evokes a nostalgia for both my son as a baby, and the close relationship my friend and I had. I had a very lonely early parenting experience with my firstborn and my friend gave me a lot of support in the form of a close friendship when I had my son.
No, as I'd forgotten that I'd brought my film camera to Lincoln.
7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

It evokes memories of the trip -- climbing the massively steep hill, walking around town trying to find something for dinner, my daughter being terribly excited about the hotel room. I'm also fondly remembering many of the other day trips we took around the same time, a rarity now for some reason.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I'm not sure. Perhaps they might see it a mere image of a woman and a baby and write it off as unspectacular. Perhaps some of the more sentimentally-inclined might like the image for the fact that it's a woman with a baby. Who knows?

A reflection of my girlfriend at the time Stacey Blanchard, (now friends with my wife and I) in a hotel in Montreal. We were there for her birthday and had driven through a bone-crushing downpour from Albany, NY, to get there.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It makes me stop to think abut everything that has happened since then, good and bad.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

Yes and no. I have a bag of film -- a small camping ditty/duffel, really -- of film from ages ago, and another one that is even older. I didn't know what to expect.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

When I saw the photo, I was curious about what was happening behind us in the reflection and where we were. The photo also made me think about everything that has happened since then--to me, to Stacey and everything in general. I remember the rain, and Stacey's teal Honda Civic. I remember that Nikon 24mm f2.8 AF-D lens (which I still have) and the borrowed Nikon FM3a body.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Hopefully they'll see a passing insignificant moment from 13 years ago, and how it can be interesting when rediscovered.

This is my son, Josh, kicking some skate flips. I think they were taking photos to try to catch themselves in the air, thinking maybe it was something amazing they wanted to look back at and check out what they were doing.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?
I can't believe how grown up he is now. He shaves and wears tailored suits everyday.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I had no expectations..but it could have been an entire roll of dairy goats, so I was happy to see Josh instead.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Josh had lots of friends and had a wonderful childhood growing up in the idyllic town of Ferndale. Here he is hanging out, being a kid.
I think of him and what it was like for him to grow up here.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?
I think they might remember being that age and skate boarding after school. Hanging out with friends on a warm afternoon.

4. What are we looking at here?

My family and my in-laws on the steps of the lightkeeper's house at Absecon Lighthouse in Atlantic City, New Jersey. That's my wife Sara in red and our sons Jamie and Sean standing in front of her. Behind her are her Aunt Jane and her mother Ruth, and to the right are her brothers Dan (front) and Jeff (rear). Sara was the executive director at the lighthouse and oversaw its restoration and the reconstruction of the lightkeeper's house. This is actually the second reconstruction; the first was destroyed by arson before it had been completed.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

It makes me feel old, since my sons are now adults.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I wasn't sure what to expect; I knew the photos were at least 15 years old, since I got my first digital camera in 2002, but I wasn't sure what I had used the film for. Like most people, I took far fewer pictures in the pre-digital age, so I did expect that the photos would be of carefully chosen subjects.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Memories of people no longer with us. My wife's Aunt Jane died many years ago, and her mother is now in the late stages of dementia and confined to a nursing home. One of the old SLRs that these rolls came from was an old Nikon F that my father gave me; I thought there might be pictures of him among the photos, but there were not.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I think most people will look at it as a family photo from a sight-seeing expedition to some lighthouse, unless they read the answers to these questions and learn about our connection to this particular site.

I'm not quite sure. When my girlfriend and I lived in Syracuse, we drove to a lot of towns in the area, often to go to book sales. All the towns in the area had book sales in the summer. I think this was in Marathon, New York, but that's just a guess.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Happy and curious. I wish I knew more about what this parade was. Did it happen every year? It was so out-of-the-blue for us. We just happened to be there that day, and this parade was going on, with all these homemade costumes. I like the kids in the front row wearing masks.
Oh, a mixture--a little happy, a little sad, but glad to have the photo. It's like getting back an old memory.
6. Is this what you expected to see?

I figured the roll of film was from when I lived in Syracuse, but I didn't know what to expect. I wasn't sure any pictures would come out, after all these years. I hadn't exactly taken care of the film. It was just sitting in my desk; I'd moved with it several times.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

A lot of fond sensory memories. Just the way the things in the photo evoke, for me, our apartment. The floral comforter, the flannel sheets. It must have cold. Monique's lamp. Even that plastic cup on her nightstand. Charlie always liked to snuggle.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?
Not at all. I vaguely remember going to this concert (I went to a lot of concerts over the years and a lot of Grateful Dead concerts), but I did not remember taking any photos and was very surprised when I saw the images on this lost roll.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

This brings back a lot of very good memories. Mike was one of my best college friends and he died unexpectedly - way too young - in December 2014.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I think it's an unusual scene - you don't typically see microphones on stands with umbrellas at concerts, or anywhere for that matter. Anyone who knew Mike will smile seeing him in his element. I also think this photo captures a small part of the experience of going to a Grateful Dead concert, especially for those fans who were into taping the shows.

4. What are we looking at here?

My mom under the blanket in the hospital

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Mixed feelings. My mom was a tough cookie & fiercely independent. As strange as it seems, this photo makes me feel happy. I know it brought reassurance & happiness to her that I visited, was there for her, every day, during her too frequent hospital stays in her later years. At the same time I feel sad because I miss her. Although she didn't pass on until some years later, this photo seems to forebode her absence, missing her & the sadness it would bring. I also feel indebted to Lost Rolls America for offering the opportunity for me to again "be there" with her.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

I have absolutely no recollection of taking the photos on this roll -- even after seeing them. One half of the roll is my mom in the hospital. The other half is of extended family, including my mom, joyfully hanging out. Bottles of wine. People crashed on a couch. None of the family pictured in that half can identify where or when they were taken.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I realized that taking photos in this kind of situation serves a couple ways. It helps me focus on picture-taking -- which reduces the anxiety I might be feeling (vis-à-vis my mom's situation). It also allows me to playfully engage my mom - even if she is thumbing her nose at me in another frame taken in the hospital. Since this photo was taken before the ubiquitousness of the iPhone & digital revolution, I remember how photographing required intention: having a larger and heavier camera plus film.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Feel uncomfortable. Also, they might remember their own experiences of loss.

Thrilled: I had wanted for years to access, see, experience and photograph this abandoned viaduct. When tours were offered before it was modernized, I jumped at the chance. Grateful: To have had the opportunity to visit it since it was everything I imagined it would be.
6. Is this what you expected to see?

No. Vacation photos from our trip to the Badlands in South Dakota was what I was expecting to see. These are the last photos that I took of Pepper before he died in Spring 2006.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

Makes me smile when I see it and I remember how much he loved people. I always wanted a Dalmatian as a kid but my parents would not get me one. Pepper was my first Dalmatian. He fulfilled my childhood desire. He was a rescue dog that went on to become a therapy dog. I am so very proud of him.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Maybe it will bring back fond memories of their deceased pets.

Our Dalmatian, Pepper, in front of our Christmas tree. Pepper died in April of the following year (2006).

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Sad. He was 12 years old when I took this picture and not in good health. I knew that this would be our last Christmas with him.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

No. I thought the roll would contain only photos from our vacation to the Badlands in South Dakota.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

I really miss Pepper. He was a therapy dog that visited patients in a hospital and nursing home. I had forgotten about his therapy dog tag which he wore on his collar. He was a great dog and I still miss him.

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Maybe they will remember special moments with their family pets. Maybe it will bring back memories of their pets which are no longer here.

 • 1. When was this photo taken?

Guessing around 2006 or 2007

2. Where was this photo taken?

Coney Island USA

3. Who took this photo?

I took the photo

4. What are we looking at here?

We're looking at the iconic Wonder Wheel. One of my favorite objects to shoot.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

I feel so happy every time I shoot at Coney Island, and every time I look at my images from there. It holds a dear place for me. I've always been drawn to the seaside and old piers and parks. Also, being a native New Yorker, this is always available to me and I try to go and shoot there a lot. This photo feels especially good because of the feel of the film and the imperfections.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

Not sure because I didn't know what was on the roll I submitted, but to be honest - I am not surprised because I love to shoot this ride!

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

The smells and sounds of the park and the boardwalk....

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

I imagine people will remember their own experience there, when they look at this? Or if they have never been, perhaps imagine what it is like...

4. What are we looking at here?

This dude had knitted himself all up. In true New York fashion, most people barely glanced his way. I never knew what the little girl was pointing to, but I found it interesting that he was standing right in front of her, and she seems to be occupied with something else.

5. How does this old photo make you feel?

Really, this to me feels like so many aspects of NY rolled into one brief moment! Eccentric, diverse, crowded, interesting, colorful, iconic.

6. Is this what you expected to see?

Not sure, since I had no idea what was on the film. But I am so happy to see this, and actually personally love the image.

7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?

My favorite thing to do is take pictures in the city, pretty much solely digital now. When I see this, I remember taking out my plastic Diana camera (that this was taken with) and hoping for the best and knowing it would look interesting no matter what, just by virtue of the unknown quality of the camera itself, with its plastic lens. (Hence the purple light leaks).

8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?

Not sure, but maybe a bit of a laugh because of the moment it captures, and the composition...
