1. When was this photo taken?
2. Where was this photo taken?
5235 Connecticut Ave., NW, Washington DC.
3. Who took this photo?
4. What are we looking at here?
A "low light" exposure of the interior of my first apartment in Washington. It was in the attic of a row house near Chevy Chase Circle. The shadowy figure in the background is my brother Mason.
5. How does this old photo make you feel?
Mixed feelings of nostalgia and sadness. My brother Mason died 3 years ago; we shared the small apartment for about a year. It was my first "solo" apartment when working in DC at age 28, after several years of living with roommates in shared houses.
6. Is this what you expected to see?
No, I had no idea what to expect, and thought that I would have made a better image than this dark and obscure one, which at first I didn't recognize.
7. Does this photo bring back any memories?
It reminds me of urban living in Washington, DC, close to my family, and working downtown at a now-defunct government agency (Civil Aeronautics Board). I was sharing the apartment with my brother Mason and commuting to my job by bicycle. It was a small one-room space with a shared bathroom downstairs, so hot & stuffy in the summer (no A/C) that we sometimes would sleep on the roof! But I felt like I was living the good life there.
8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?
I think others would respond more to the memories than to the image, which is not good!
