1. When was this photo taken?
2. Where was this photo taken?
At a horseback riding resort in upstate New York
3. Who took this photo?
4. What are we looking at here?
My nephew Matthew, as an adolescent, and his grandfather Sam (my father), sharing a horseback riding experience at a family reunion in upstate New York.
5. How does this old photo make you feel?
This image evokes in me a mixture of longing and bittersweet feelings. My nephew Matthew was very close with his grandfather, who passed away only seven years after this photo was taken. The loss was extremely difficult for Matthew. He is now a father of 2 boys and named his older son Sam, after his grandfather (and my father). I see in this photo my father as I’d like to remember him--strong and enjoying time with his family.
6. Is this what you expected to see?
No! I had forgotten about these images and the details of this extended family reunion.
7. Does this photo bring back any memories?
Yes, this brings back memories of my father, who so enjoyed his close relationship with Matthew, his first grandchild. I see in this photo the vigorous, optimistic person that my father was. I had no way of knowing at the time that this sort of physical activity would not be possible for him in a few short years.
8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?
I think that people will notice how serious they look and how my father's horse appears to be challenging him. Nevertheless this was a special moment that grandfather and grandson had together, taking pleasure from each other's company.
