Between Monument Valleyand Garden of the Gods
3. Who took this photo?
4. What are we looking at here?
A Navajo man looking out upon the vista of Monument Valley from his truck.
5. How does this old photo make you feel?
Thankful to be given this moment.
As a photographer...connecting with a stranger..having them give themselves
over to me for a brief moment is very powerful.
He's given me this perfect thing.
There is an inherent dignity in that.
I am completely absorbed in the moment.
When I frame a photograph I enter an alternate reality.
Time and I no longer exist.
It's a selfless act.
6. Is this what you expected to see?
I know when I have got something.
I remember our time together.
We both enjoyed it immensely.
There was a rapport between us.
7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?
You can take a girl out of the West....
but not the West out of the girl.
I grew up out West.
The wide open spaces are a part of my soul.
My father would take us on these summer road trips.
He wanted us to see America...it's beauty and it's vastness.
It makes me think of the time we were driving from Kansas toward the Rocky Mountains. Every 30 miles or so I would ask,
"When will we see them rising on the horizon?"
He would say, "Soon."
And I would ask, "Will they be "Purple Mountains Majesties" like the song?"
And he answered, "Yes."
When they first appeared from the
window of our car they were purple.
I was amazed.
It was a moment that was very
profound for me.
It married truth and art for me.
I didn't know I was a photographer yet.
But it was a pivotal moment.
This photograph brings me back there again.
8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?
I don't know.
