1. When was this photo taken?
August 2011
2. Where was this photo taken?
San Francisco
3. Who took this photo?
I did
4. What are we looking at here?
This is my mom. It was taken in my studio apartment on my last day in San Francisco. I had just finished college and was moving back to LA. A couple weeks before, my mother was diagnosed wth metastatic breast cancer so I decided to move back home to be with her as much as I could. My parents drove up to help me make the move and clean the apartment. We packed everything up and slept together on the floor.
5. How does this old photo make you feel?
It brings me to tears to see my mother. This September will mark 4 years since she passed away. I miss her so much. At the time, I didn't know that I would be caring for her through hospice. That I would go through such pain from loosing her.
6. Is this what you expected to see?
I did not expect to see this at all. It is an emotional and pleasant surprise. I can't believe how many things have changed in my life since this photo was taken.
7. What kind of memories does this photo bring back?
I had a really fun time in SF, going to college, smoking pot and getting wasted with my friends, making stuff, being overly self involved and indulgent, I came into my own. I had little responsibility, working part time to make rent and making sure I studied. Not to mention, I had my own studio apartment at 22. I felt like I could do whatever I wanted to and I did. My parents were so supportive, they came up to help me move. We all slept on the floor together.
8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?
I think people will see a portrait of a person. The context of this photo is more powerful than the photo itself. There she is, my mom, with a smile on her face, living, being close to me.
