2. Where was this photo taken?
3. Who took this photo?
4. What are we looking at here?
This is a photo of a roommate I had for a couple of months at a guesthouse I worked at in Provincetown, at the very tip of Cape Cod. Provincetown is a place known for its eccentricity and this guy was the very epitome of that spirit. His name is John McConnell, but everyone called him Pickle. He was like a wild creature, sweet and funny, but he also had his demons.
5. How does this old photo make you feel?
That summer in Provincetown was a real revelation for me and seeing these old photos of Pickle brings right back that time when the town felt so new and fresh, and wild and free to me.
6. Is this what you expected to see?
No. I had no idea what was on this roll of film. I'm thrilled to see it!
7. Does this photo bring back any memories?
Absolutely. This was my second summer in Provincetown after having moved there from New York City and graduating from the journalism school at Columbia University. I was in my late 20's and looking for some adventure and a bohemian place to live. I found it. And Pickle was a big part of that initial experience.
8. How do you think others will respond to this photo?
I chose this photo because even if you know nothing about the person who is the subject, I think its a good portrait that captures the spirit of the person.
